Samsung Workers Oppose Rs 3.25 Crore Bonus for Chip Division Staff

The CSR Journal Magazine

Samsung’s largest union has recently endorsed a substantial bonus arrangement benefiting 78,000 employees within the company’s semiconductor division. Each worker is expected to receive an average bonus of 513 million won, equivalent to approximately Rs 3.25 crore. The entire package involves a financial outlay of around $26.5 billion. This agreement comes amid growing tensions, including threats of an 18-day strike that could have had serious repercussions on the global semiconductor supply chain.

Consumer Electronics Workers Prepare Legal Challenge

In response to this bonus deal, a smaller labour union representing Samsung’s consumer electronics workforce has announced its intention to contest the arrangement in a South Korean court. The Samsung Electronics Co Union (SECU), encompassing approximately 13,000 members from the smartphone, TV, and home appliances segments, is set to petition for a suspension of the bonus package. The SECU has been vocal about the perceived inequity in the bonus distribution across different divisions.

Reportedly, the union previously sought an injunction to halt the vote approving the bonus package. As emerging reports suggest, SECU plans to submit updated court documents within the upcoming week, aiming to receive a judicial decision within the next month.

The dissent among certain employees arises primarily from the perception that the bonus benefits are disproportionately favouring those in the semiconductor sector, which has experienced significant growth due to the surge in artificial intelligence-related demands. Conversely, employees in other areas, such as smartphones and televisions, are expected to receive considerably smaller bonuses.

Sharp Contrast In Profit Distribution Across Divisions

The bonus arrangement for the semiconductor division has been established during a period when Samsung reported a staggering 49-fold increase in profits, driven by heightened demand for memory chips from AI data centres. Over recent years, Samsung has gained considerable prominence, recently becoming the second Asian corporation to achieve a market capitalisation exceeding $1 trillion, following TSMC. Samsung’s semiconductor division plays a crucial economic role, reportedly accounting for around 12.5 per cent of South Korea’s gross domestic product, with memory chips contributing approximately 35 per cent of the nation’s total exports.

This agreement, mediated by the government, specifies that semiconductor employees will receive special bonuses tied directly to the segment’s operating profit. Following the earlier threats of an extensive strike, the bonuses will amount to 10.5 per cent of the semiconductor division’s operating profits, provided mainly in shares, supplemented by a further 1.5 per cent in cash. The expected average payout, as previously stated, comes to around 513 million won or about $340,000, around Rs 3.25 crore.

Outlook On Upcoming Legal Proceedings

The forthcoming legal action by SECU is likely to draw significant attention as it highlights the growing fissures within Samsung’s workforce regarding compensation and profit-sharing arrangements. The outcome of this case may set a precedent for how bonus structures are structured in large corporations, particularly those operating in multiple sectors like Samsung. As the dates approach for the court’s decision, both the unions and employees are expected to remain highly attentive to developments.
