Samsung Prepares To Introduce Silicon-Carbon Batteries In Galaxy S27 Series

Samsung has traditionally depended on graphite-based lithium-ion batteries for its devices, similar to those utilised in Apple’s iPhone range. Despite the industry’s growing interest in silicone-carbon battery technology, Samsung has largely adhered to a consistent battery capacity of 5,000mAh across various models, including the Galaxy S21 Ultra and the recently released Galaxy S26 series. There are reports indicating that the South Korean manufacturer may now be transitioning towards silicon-carbon cells for its upcoming devices.

According to a report from Schrdinger Intel, internal documents from Samsung SDI reveal that the company is currently testing high-capacity silicon-carbon batteries. These prototypes include capacities of 12,000mAh, 18,000mAh, and 20,000mAh. Importantly, these new designs reportedly employ advanced stacking techniques that allow for higher capacities while maintaining similar physical dimensions to the existing batteries, potentially enabling an increase in battery life without adding extra thickness to the devices.

Silicon-carbon batteries have the advantage of storing more energy compared to conventional graphite-based options. However, the current prototypes are reported to have not yet met Samsung’s commercial standards for longevity. The tested units achieve around 960 charge cycles, which falls short of the company’s target of approximately 1,500 cycles, indicating that further development is needed before these batteries can be widely adopted.

Details About Galaxy S27 Series Models

The anticipated Galaxy S27 series is expected to feature four distinct models, as indicated by tipster Ice Universe. This lineup may include a new Pro variant, along with the Galaxy S27, S27+, and S27 Ultra. Notably, there are claims that the Ultra model may eliminate support for the S Pen, marking a departure from Samsung’s established series structure. Since the launch of the Galaxy S20 series in 2020, the company has consistently employed a three-tier flagship strategy comprising Standard, Plus, and Ultra models.

If the rumours regarding the removal of S Pen support are accurate, this would represent a notable shift in Samsung’s approach to its flagship offerings. The potential introduction of a Pro model simultaneously opens new possibilities for features and capabilities, which may enhance the overall appeal of the series.

Additionally, the new M16 OLED panels are expected to be part of the Galaxy S27 series, with reports suggesting that these displays will also be found in flagship devices from other major manufacturers, such as Apple and Google. The M16 panels are anticipated to offer improvements in aspects like brightness, colour, and lifespan.
