Samrat Choudhary and Tejashwi Yadav Lock Horns In Assembly As Bihar Cm Wins Trust Vote

The CSR Journal Magazine

On April 24, Bihar Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary successfully secured a trust vote in the 243-member Bihar legislative assembly, thereby reinforcing the unity of the National Democratic Alliance (NDA). This vote is significant as it marks a key political transition following Nitish Kumar’s resignation from the Chief Minister position. The confidence motion received support from various NDA constituents, including the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Janata Dal (United), which collectively reaffirmed their support for Choudhary.

The successful passage of the trust vote indicates the NDA’s robust coalition, even amidst previous political instability in Bihar. Choudhary’s election is not just a personal achievement, but also reflects the NDA’s strategy to maintain governance stability. His ascent to power is expected to influence Bihar’s political landscape considerably.

The trust vote was presented immediately after Choudhary formally addressed the assembly, outlining his plans and vision for the state. This moment was pivotal as it initiated a new chapter in Bihar’s governance, aiming to foster developmental stability in a state that has previously seen frequent changes in leadership.

Tejashwi Yadav Critiques Choudhary’s Leadership

Following the trust vote, the Leader of Opposition, Tejashwi Yadav, expressed his sentiments regarding Choudhary’s election. Yadav thanked Choudhary for his role in transitioning Bihar’s government from an “elected Chief Minister” to a “selected Chief Minister,” and he remarked sarcastically on Choudhary’s educational background, indicating it had ties to the legacy of Lalu Prasad Yadav.

Yadav’s criticisms also highlighted the frequent governmental changes in Bihar, pointing out that this was the fifth government formed within a span of five years. He asserted that a stable government is essential for effective development, underpinning the unique challenges Bihar faces. His comments aimed to cast doubt on Choudhary’s ability to lead the state effectively.

In his remarks, Yadav sought to undermine Choudhary’s authority by emphasising the changing of political leaders and the implication that Bihar’s governance has been plagued by instability. This political discourse is reflective of the intense rivalry within the state’s political framework.

Choudhary’s Response and Political Background

In response to Yadav’s remarks, Choudhary stated, “Power is not anyone’s inheritance,” emphasising that his elevation to Chief Minister was due to the support of the NDA leadership and the citizens of Bihar. He cited the importance of collective strengthening in governance and acknowledged contributions from notable leaders such as Nitish Kumar, Prime Minister Modi, and others.

Choudhary highlighted his background in politics, as the first BJP Chief Minister of Bihar. His heritage includes a history of political engagement; his father, Shakuni Choudhary, served multiple terms as an MLA, while his mother, Parvati Devi, won the same constituency in 1998. This lineage reflects the entrenched political nature of his family, providing Choudhary with insight and experience in governance.

Following his appointment as state president of the BJP in 2023, Choudhary transitioned to the role of Deputy Chief Minister in 2024. His ascent to the Chief Minister’s position follows Nitish Kumar’s resignation, marking a pivotal change in Bihar’s political hierarchy and potentially affecting future governance decisions.
