Rylen Anil, 16-year-old Ethical Hacker Exposes Vulnerabilities in India’s NEET and JEE Advanced Exams

The CSR Journal Magazine

At the age of sixteen, Rylen Anil has garnered attention for his remarkable skills in cybersecurity, having recently identified critical vulnerabilities in two major examination systems in India: the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) and Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) Advanced. The Class 12 CBSE student, originally from Dubai, accomplished this feat within just five days, prompting necessary responses from governmental bodies.

Rylen is one of a burgeoning group of young ethical hackers, including peers like Nisarga and Sarthak, who have diligently worked to uncover serious flaws in the nation’s educational infrastructure. Their efforts have compelled authorities to address pressing and uncomfortable issues regarding the security of examination systems.

In an interview, Rylen detailed his journey in discovering these vulnerabilities, revealing insights into his methodical approach and the anxieties he faced upon reporting his findings. He contended that negative labels attached to such individuals as “anti-national” fail to recognise their constructive intentions.

Details of the Vulnerabilities Uncovered

In his recent findings, Rylen reported that identifying these vulnerabilities required a significant commitment of time and skill. For example, he indicated that his hack for the JEE took approximately three to four hours, while the one for NEET took about three hours. He emphasised that not everyone would possess the same level of technical expertise necessary to execute these discoveries.

On May 31, Rylen disclosed the NEET vulnerability by first reaching out to the Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT-In). Shortly thereafter, he shared the information on Twitter. The following morning, he received a commendatory email from Abhishek Singh, the Director General of the National Testing Agency (NTA), expressing gratitude for his intervention and indicating that they had taken the portal offline.

Similarly, after notifying Mr Singh regarding the JEE vulnerability, the issue was swiftly escalated to the heads of Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs), who reportedly addressed the flaw within a few hours. He remains uncertain whether the JEE portal was taken down post-hack but confirmed that necessary corrections were implemented promptly.

Impact on India’s Educational System

The response to these discoveries has raised critical discussions about the security of India’s educational platforms. Rylen expressed satisfaction with the quick action taken by the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) and the NTA following the reports. Nonetheless, he underscored the existence of numerous vulnerabilities that still require immediate attention within government systems.

With a particular focus on future intentions, Rylen stated that he aspires to build a career in cybersecurity, potentially becoming a Chief Information Security Officer (CISO). His experiences have motivated him to continue exploring ethical hacking, allowing him to contribute positively to the safety of digital infrastructures.

Despite initial fears regarding societal perceptions and possible legal consequences of his actions, Rylen detailed how his parents eventually supported his ethical hacking ventures after he clarified the intentions behind his work. He noted that some of his peers who previously raised concerns about discrepancies in the CBSE system faced unwarranted backlash, highlighting the societal stigma surrounding actions aimed at systemic improvement.

Ultimately, Rylen’s contributions have highlighted a pivotal moment for young individuals engaging in technical fields. He believes that collective efforts from youth like himself can lead to a more secure and robust educational framework in India.
