Rs 3,000 Interim Relief for Best Employees and Rs 2,000 Monthly Seasonal Increase for Wet Leased Workers

The CSR Journal Magazine

On June 22, a significant meeting was held in Mumbai, where Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde chaired discussions aimed at addressing the demands of the Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport (BEST) employees. The outcome of this meeting marked the withdrawal of a strike that had been anticipated by the BEST Employees’ Action Committee. This move was welcomed by the state government as it prioritised negotiations to strengthen the BEST undertaking.

The meeting included vital decisions regarding the financial concerns of employees. Among these decisions, pending gratuity payments were promised to be settled within the current financial year. This commitment demonstrates the government’s effort to alleviate the financial strain on employees who have awaited these payments.

In a notable agreement, it was established that until a new wage agreement is reached, regular BEST employees will receive an interim financial relief of Rs 3,000 per month. Additionally, workers on wet lease contracts will be granted a seasonal increase of Rs 2,000 monthly. This financial adjustment aims to provide immediate support to employees while long-term wage discussions continue.

Key Participants in the Meeting

The meeting at Sahyadri Guest House included several prominent figures. In addition to Deputy Chief Minister Shinde, attendants included Transport Minister Pratap Sarnaik, MLAs Sachin Ahir and Murji Patel, Additional Chief Secretary Aseem Gupta, Principal Secretary Navin Sona, and Mumbai Municipal Commissioner Ashwini Bhide. The participation of officials from the BEST administration and employee representatives highlighted the collaborative approach taken to resolve these issues.

Following the discussions, Shinde directed that BEST bus services resume immediately. This instruction was vital for ensuring that Mumbai’s public transport does not face further disruption. Furthermore, the commitment to clear pending gratuity dues within the financial year reflects the administration’s intention to uphold its responsibilities towards its workforce.

Additionally, the Deputy Chief Minister underscored the need for enhancing Mumbai’s public transport infrastructure. Plans were announced to procure 5,000 new buses over the next three years to improve the effectiveness and reach of BEST services. Financial provisions will be structured accordingly to allow for this expansion.

Future Plans for BEST and Employee Welfare

An important aspect of the meeting was the ‘Kayapalat’ (Transformation) proposal, prepared by the BEST administration. Shinde assured that this proposal would be submitted promptly to the government and subsequently presented to the Cabinet for its approval. The proposal aims to modernise BEST operations and improve service delivery across Mumbai.

Shinde emphasised that BEST plays a critical role in Mumbai’s public transport system, referring to it as the city’s lifeline. He stated that strengthening and enhancing the capability of BEST is paramount to ensuring efficient transportation for millions of residents. The ongoing discussions and agreements reflect a commitment to maintaining the reliability of public transport services in Mumbai.

Overall, the outcomes from this meeting highlight significant strides towards resolving employee grievances and enhancing the operational capacity of BEST, ensuring that both the workforce and the commuting public benefit from these initiatives.
