Residents of Baduria, West Bengal, raised concerns earlier this week after they observed suspicious activity involving vehicles transporting goods from a Trinamool Congress (TMC) office during the night hours. This led to a police investigation, resulting in raids on the office and a nearby farmhouse reportedly linked to Dipankar Bhattacharya, the chairperson of Baduria municipality.
During their searches, authorities made a startling discovery: a significant sum of cash buried in a jute field. As the counting continued, the total amount of recovered cash reportedly surpassed Rs 2.24 crore. The unusual events first came to light on May 24, when local residents noticed the unusual night-time movement of goods.
In addition to the cash, police recovered around 4,000 tarpaulin sheets that were allegedly designated for government relief efforts, as well as approximately Rs 80 lakh in cash at Bhattacharya’s farmhouse, according to reports from local news outlets. Partially burnt documents were also discovered near the TMC office, raising further suspicions.
Details Surrounding the Discovery of Cash
Although Bhattacharya and his associates reportedly fled the scene before their apprehension, a comprehensive investigation was launched following a formal complaint filed by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) against him on a Monday. Bhattacharya managed to avoid arrest throughout that day, only to be apprehended the following day at a hotel.
Following his arrest, he was presented in court and subsequently taken into police custody. During the interrogation process, Bhattacharya disclosed the existence of cash buried in the jute field behind his home, prompting a thorough search operation that employed sniffer dogs and drone technology.
After several hours of excavating, police unearthed bundles of Rs 500 notes and gold items stored inside trolley bags and sacks. Visual representations shared on social media depicted officers carrying the sacks through the field while further digging continued. A large crowd gathered in the vicinity, contributing to the scene’s intensity.
