Rajasthan Withdraws 4 Supplementary History Textbooks Over Mughal Content Row

The CSR Journal Magazine

Four supplementary History textbooks for classes 9 to 12 are being withdrawn from the curriculum due to the Mughal depiction in the books. This decision is from the Rajasthan School Education Department and was taken after multiple objections by the Education Minister Madan Dilawar. In an official order issued by Director Sitaram Jat, these textbooks have been classified as “deleted texts,” they aren’t available for classroom teaching. The books which have been withdrawn have titles Rajasthan’s Freedom Movement and Tradition of Valor (Class 9), History and Culture of Rajasthan (Class 10), Golden India After Independence Part 1 (Class 11), and Golden India After Independence Part 2 (Class 12).

When were these books introduced?

These text books were introduced in curriculum in 2020–21 academic session. Then Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot had introduced these textbook with an aim to address the gaps in Rajasthan, which weren’t covered in NCERT textbooks. These books weren’t part of the formal examination system. Officials of the Education Board have supported this decision, calling the books less relevant in academic context, and continuing it would be unnecessary.

Political controversy over the move

This move has ignited political controversy. The former Education Minister of Rajasthan and Congress State President Govind Singh Dotasra criticized the move, called it a move to influence students’ thinking, impose historical perspectives and limit exposure. Reacting on the allegation by the Congress Ministers, Education Minister Dilawar said this is an act of ‘History Correction’.”Congress party has mislead the public and neglected leaders like BR Ambedkar, Lal Bahadur Shastri, and Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel. “We are not distorting history; we want to correct it,” Dilawar said media. “Ambedkar was never a Jan Sangh leader, but among the greatest leaders of Congress, and yet he has been reduced to a one-line mention as a Dalit icon,”he added.

Some teacher leaders have argued that discontinuing these books would narrow students’ understanding of history. Following the orders, authorities directed all District Project Coordinators under Samagra Shiksha to follow the order, and discontinue these books for the 2026–27 academic session.
