Rajasthan Saints on Hunger Strike Warn of Samadhi if Demands Ignored

The CSR Journal Magazine

In an ongoing indefinite hunger protest by saints of Bhairana Dham which is situated in Bichoon area of Dudu district, Rajasthan, Saints have warned if government doesn’t listen to their demands, they will take Samadhi. The protest is related to environment conservation and preservation of the 500-year-old religious site Dadu Dayal. Starting from April 15,Saints are performing Agni Tap, they are sitting near sacred fire pits, even though the temperature in that area has crossed 40 degrees Celsius.

What are the saints protesting for?

The silent protest by the Saints of Bhairana Dham is against the RIICO’s land acquisition for an investment zone in the forest area that surrounds the dham. Controversy started when the government proposed an industrial zone just beside the 500-year-old Bhairana Dham. Ever since the proposal was passed both the Saints of the dham and local residents have opposed the plan and called it a direct threat towards the religious heritage. Saints and locals have claimed that the area is home to over40,000 trees, and rich in biodiversity. They have objected to the project and claimed that it would disturb the ecosystem. Rajasthan’s Tree Man Amar Bhahda has opposed this project and demanded immediate withdrawal of the project. Saints have even said that if this project comes up it will disturb the spiritual practices such as meditation. Besides, Saints have claimed the land to be sacred community forest land, and industrial work should not be done here.

Why are Saints warning of live Samadhi?

For over 16 days now, Saints have been on the protest and hunger strike but the government has yet not accepted their demand. Even though Chief Minister Bhajanlal Sharma visited Saints and assured of looking into the matter, nothing has been done. Now, the Saints have warned, if the government doesn’t accept the demands, they might march to Jaipur or take Samadhi. Among the Saints who are on protest are Ramratan Das Maharaj, Dev Das, and Prakash Das Maharaj. Prakash Das Maharaj said, “Our primary demand is declaring Bhairana Dham a protected area, and for all the trees that fell till now, fresh plantation should be done.” He even noted that the pits for samadhi have already been dug. Saints have made serious accusations of burying wildlife alive during land-leveling operations.
