Punjab Prepares for Upcoming Elections as BJP Initiates Campaign

The CSR Journal Magazine

Punjab is currently in the spotlight as the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) begins its campaign for the upcoming state elections scheduled for February 2027. This initiative comes even as the final phase of the West Bengal Assembly elections remains to be concluded. PM Narendra Modi’s statement during celebrations in Bihar on November 14, 2025, highlighted the BJP’s strategy of maintaining an ongoing electoral momentum. The Prime Minister remarked that the Ganga flows from Bihar to Bengal, signalling the party’s aspirations for success in West Bengal and, subsequently, Punjab.

The BJP has launched its campaign in Punjab with the recent joining of Raghav Chadha and five other Members of Parliament from the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP). This development indicates the party’s eagerness to strengthen its influence in a state that has traditionally been challenging for it. Punjab’s importance in the political landscape is further underscored by its configurations with Uttar Pradesh, which will also face elections in the same period.

While the opposition may perceive a longer timeline before the elections, the BJP’s organisational strategy does not allow for complacency. The party’s consistent engagement in election battles is regarded as essential for maintaining its visibility and relevance in Indian politics.

Leaders Amplifying BJP’s Campaign Efforts

High-profile leaders within the BJP are actively campaigning in Bengal while simultaneously preparing for the challenge in Punjab. PM Modi has been engaging with the electorate through rallies, and party leaders like Amit Shah have dedicated significant time to ensure a robust campaign. The party’s strategy includes addressing various issues pertinent to the voters and fostering connections at the grassroots level.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah’s intensive campaign efforts, alongside other prominent members such as Yogi Adityanath and Himanta Biswa Sarma, reflects the importance the party attributes to the upcoming elections. These leaders have been seen engaging in local events, aimed at consolidating BJP’s presence and seeking to resonate with the electorate effectively.

Despite Punjab being a state where the BJP has not historically held power independently, the party is working towards creating a stronger local identity. This includes efforts to bring more state-specific leaders into the fold, as the BJP requires local figures to establish a foothold in the region.

BJP’s Historical Context in Punjab

The BJP has traditionally been a junior partner to the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) and has not formed a government independently in Punjab. The split with the SAD in 2020 over the contentious farm bills has only added layers of complexity to the political dynamics. The necessity for the BJP to cultivate local leadership in Punjab has become crucial for its electoral ambitions.

Currently, Ravneet Singh Bittu stands out as a prominent BJP leader in Punjab, having transitioned from the Congress party. His involvement is part of the BJP’s broader strategy to enhance its visibility in the state. However, the party acknowledges that additional local leaders are required to galvanise support and effectively challenge the opposition.

As the BJP gears up for another electoral battle, it remains cognizant of the necessity for strategic planning, extensive grassroots outreach, and the cultivation of local narratives that resonate with Punjab’s electorates. With a mere ten months before the elections, the BJP’s campaign apparatus is already in motion, indicative of its vigorous approach to governance and electoral politics in India.
