Public Transport Initiative Adopted by Delhi Government Officials

The CSR Journal Magazine

Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta exemplified a commitment to fuel conservation on Monday by utilising public transport for her daily commute. She travelled on the Delhi Metro from Kashmere Gate station, strategically located near her official residence on Raj Niwas Marg. Accompanying her was the Social Welfare Minister, Ravindra Singh Indraj. Together, they made their way to the ITO station, which is in proximity to the Delhi Secretariat.

The commitment to public transport extended to other members of the Delhi government, who also opted for the metro to get to work as part of the ‘Metro Monday’ initiative. This scheme aims to reduce fuel consumption and mitigate pollution levels in the city.

Education Minister and Other Ministers Participate

Delhi Education Minister Ashish Sood also took to the metro, travelling from INA to Civil Lines, before switching to an e-rickshaw to reach Raj Niwas Marg. His journey was part of a planned interaction with school heads from Zones 7, 8, and 9, covering regions in North and North West-A districts.

In addition to Sood, Cabinet Ministers Manjinder Singh Sirsa, Kapil Mishra, and Pankaj Singh joined the initiative by commuting via the Delhi Metro to fulfil their official responsibilities. This collective effort not only supports the metro initiative but also aims to inspire residents of Delhi to join in the campaign.

Gupta expressed her appeal through a post on social media, urging all residents to actively participate in efforts toward fuel conservation and pollution control. She highlighted the importance of adopting alternatives like the metro, buses, and carpooling whenever feasible.

Details of the ‘Mera Bharat, Mera Yogdan’ Campaign

The initiative aligns with a broader campaign launched by Gupta, titled ‘Mera Bharat, Mera Yogdan,’ aimed at saving fuel over a period of 90 days. This campaign is notably in response to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s appeal to the nation to conserve fuel amid concerns regarding the ongoing conflict affecting the Strait of Hormuz, a vital corridor for global oil shipments.

In light of the Prime Minister’s call, the Delhi government has increased its efforts to promote public transport as a practical solution. A two-day work-from-home policy has been introduced for all Delhi government employees to encourage reduced vehicular movement. Further, the campaign has prompted the Delhi Transport Corporation to roll out special bus services tailored for government workers travelling from their homes to the nearest metro stations before continuing to the Delhi Secretariat.

These special buses are designed to operate during peak office hours, with services beginning at 9 am and resuming between 5 pm and 8 pm for return journeys. Approximately 54 buses will be deployed to support this new service, facilitating easier access to public transportation for government employees.
