Prashant Kishor to Contest Bihar’s Bankipur Bypoll

The CSR Journal Magazine

Prashant Kishor, founder of the Jan Suraaj Party, will contest the forthcoming by-election for the Bankipur Assembly constituency in Bihar. Kishor described this electoral battle as a referendum on the popularity of the government led by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in the state. Manoj Bharti, who serves as the Bihar president of the Jan Suraaj Party, confirmed Kishor’s nomination during a press conference in Patna.

The decision to field Kishor as a candidate was made during a meeting of the party’s core committee, convened shortly after the Election Commission revealed the schedule for the bypoll last week. The Bankipur seat became vacant following the resignation of BJP president Nitin Nabin, who was elected to the Rajya Sabha.

Kishor addressed supporters at the press conference, urging them to place their trust in him. He expressed confidence that he would effectively represent the constituency, stating, “The people of Bankipur are the richest and the most educated in Bihar. Let them vote for the best.” He added that even if he were to be the only member of the Legislative Assembly from his party, he would still outbalance the remaining two hundred and forty-two representatives.

Kishor Criticises Current Governance

During his discourse, the 48-year-old leader renewed his criticism of the BJP-led administration. He alleged that BJP leader Samrat Choudhary became the chief minister without directly obtaining a public mandate. Kishor noted that the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) had contested the previous Bihar Assembly election under the leadership of Janata Dal (United) president Nitish Kumar, who stepped down a few months ago.

Kishor asserted that the impending bypoll would serve as a reflection of the recent governance under Choudhary, which has existed for only two months. He stated, “If the BJP wins, I will have no hesitation in conceding that they continue to enjoy public support. If we win, it shall be for them to read the writing on the wall.” This statement serves to highlight the competitive nature of the current political landscape in Bihar.

Kishor had hinted at his intention to seek election in Bankipur in the weeks preceding this official announcement. The window for filing nomination papers is set to open on July 10 and will remain open until July 13, paving the way for a polling day scheduled for July 30, with the vote counting taking place on August 3.

Opposition Candidates and Political Context

The BJP has held the Bankipur constituency since the 1990s and has yet to announce its candidate for this critical bypoll. Additionally, the opposition coalition comprising the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD), Congress, and various Left parties has not disclosed its nominee. This lack of clarity suggests a period of strategic considerations within the opposition ranks.

In related developments, former Bihar minister Tej Pratap Yadav has established the Janshakti Janata Dal after his expulsion from the RJD, led by his father, Lalu Prasad. Yadav has put forth social activist Veena Manvi as the candidate for his party in the upcoming by-election, further diversifying the political competition for the Bankipur seat.

As the election date approaches, all eyes will be on the dynamics between Kishor and the BJP, alongside the positioning of the opposition parties. The outcome of this bypoll is anticipated to impact the political landscape in Bihar, with significant implications for the governance and electoral strategies of all involved parties.
