Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s recent trip to Indonesia is anticipated to result in crucial agreements and collaborations. Indian officials confirmed that India will assist Indonesia in developing specific electronic voting machines (EVMs), which reflects a significant endorsement of India’s election management system.

In addition, following the success of India’s air-to-air missile capabilities demonstrated during Operation Sindoor, Indonesia plans to import Astra missiles from India. This development underscores the deepening defence ties between the two nations.

To enhance critical mineral supply chains, India is also set to invest in the manufacturing of steel, nickel, and rare earth permanent magnets within Indonesia. This investment is seen as pivotal for both economic cooperation and resource management.

Joint Infrastructure Initiatives and Maritime Cooperation

The leaders of India and Indonesia are moving forward with joint initiatives to develop Sabang port, which is strategically located near the Strait of Malacca and approximately 100 miles from India’s Great Nicobar port project. This infrastructure collaboration is expected to enhance maritime connectivity and reinforce strategic economic ties.

Further discussions have also indicated Indonesia’s plan to expand its inventory of BrahMos missiles, with India poised to provide additional batteries to support this initiative. The bilateral cooperation in defence procurement indicates a strengthening commitment to mutual security.

Modi’s welcome in Jakarta included a formal reception at the Istana Merdeka, where he met Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto. The welcome featured a ceremonial display, symbolising the importance of this diplomatic engagement.

This official visit, taking place from July 6 to 8, 2023, marks Prime Minister Modi’s fourth trip to Indonesia and follows the elevation of their diplomatic relationship to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership in 2018. The timing of this visit aligns with Indonesia’s ongoing efforts to strengthen its international partnerships.

The high-level interactions during this visit are expected to enhance the momentum of the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership, with particular focus on bilateral defence and maritime coordination.
