Sonam Wangchuk concluded his hunger strike on July 24, 2026, after a period of 26 days, during which he engaged in discussions over various conditions relating to his cause. The resolution occurred following negotiations with Union Ministers JP Nadda and Jitendra Singh, as well as senior leaders from the Apex Body of Leh Ladakh, at Medanta Hospital.

In a post on X, Wangchuk expressed the importance of his decision to end the fast, stating it was made in the context of ongoing negotiations and concerns regarding potential violence in the country. He indicated that further details regarding the conditions of his strike would be provided in an upcoming video.

Wangchuk elaborated on the support he received from various political factions, noting that 65 Members of Parliament had either visited him or conveyed messages urging him to stop the hunger strike. This collective pressure played a significant role in his eventual decision.

PM Modi Urges Health Before Actions on Issues

Following Sonam Wangchuk’s announcement, Prime Minister Narendra Modi publicly encouraged him to adhere to medical advice to regain his previous weight and overall health. In a message shared on X, PM Modi emphasised the importance of Wangchuk’s well-being and expressed his hope for his swift recovery.

PM Modi’s focus on Wangchuk’s health coincided with other pressing issues addressing the recent NEET-UG examination irregularities. Modi assured the public that stringent measures would be introduced to combat such incidents, signalling a prioritised response to ongoing concerns.

On the preceding day, Modi had outlined the government’s commitment to address the allegations of examination paper leaks and announced plans to establish Fast-Track Courts to expedite judicial processes surrounding such cases. His administration aims to implement severe penalties for those found guilty of malpractice in educational assessments.

Government Actions in Response to Public Concerns

The Prime Minister’s announcement about setting up Fast-Track Courts was framed within a broader context of community distress, particularly concerning the impact of examination irregularities on students and their families. He noted that these incidents are of significant concern to many and highlighted the government’s proactive measures in addressing them.

In his communications, Modi stressed the necessity of holding examinations efficiently to ensure that students do not lose a vital academic year. He recounted that approximately 22 lakh students were able to take the exams shortly after the irregularities were detected, with results announced shortly thereafter.

Moreover, PM Modi underscored that there would be no complacency regarding these matters, asserting the need for continuous oversight. The Prime Minister detailed the measures already taken against offenders, who now face legal repercussions for their actions, ensuring that steps are being taken to restore integrity in the educational framework.
