Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the Alluri Sitarama Raju International Airport located in Bhogapuram, Andhra Pradesh. This inauguration forms part of a broader initiative in which the Prime Minister dedicated multiple development projects valued at over Rs 17,900 crore. The ceremony was marked by a warm reception for PM Modi, who was accompanied by Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu and Deputy Chief Minister Pawan Kalyan.

Modern Facilities and Advanced Technologies

The Greenfield airport has been developed under the Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model at an investment exceeding Rs 5,640 crore. Designed to accommodate six million passengers annually, the airport features a passenger terminal that aims to provide a modern, seamless, and efficient travel experience. To achieve this, the facility incorporates advanced infrastructure and state-of-the-art technologies.

Notable innovations at the airport include the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI), Building Information Modelling (BIM), and Airside 4.0 technologies. Additionally, the Airport Predictive Operations Centre (APOC) has been established to enhance operational efficiency. Biometric passenger processing and automated baggage handling systems further contribute to improved passenger convenience and safety. These innovations are set to optimise resource utilisation for enhanced operational capabilities.

The project is also committed to sustainability, incorporating energy-efficient heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems, alongside a 5 MW solar power plant and rainwater harvesting. Initiatives in smart building management and waste management complement this focus on sustainability. The terminal adheres to Green Building Standards and holds registration with the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC).

Cultural Heritage Reflected in Design

The architectural design of the airport draws from the rich cultural heritage of Andhra Pradesh. The terminal’s roof profile is inspired by the traditional Chuttilu cottages and the scenic landscapes of the Araku Valley. The flowing structure symbolises the graceful movement of a flying fish, merging regional architectural elements with contemporary design.

This thoughtful design not only enhances the aesthetic appeal of the airport but also serves practical purposes, making the facility more accessible and visitor-friendly. With these culturally rooted elements, the airport represents both a modern travel hub and a tribute to the regional identity.

The inauguration of the Alluri Sitarama Raju International Airport is anticipated to provide a substantial impetus to tourism, trade, and investment in Andhra Pradesh while also generating employment opportunities in the region.
