PM Modi to Hold Patna Roadshow After Bihar Cabinet Expansion Ceremony

The CSR Journal Magazine

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to hold a roadshow in Patna shortly after attending the cabinet expansion ceremony of the Bihar government at Gandhi Maidan. This expansion included the swearing-in of several ministers from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Janata Dal (United), and other allies within the National Democratic Alliance (NDA).

The newly appointed ministers in the cabinet led by Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary include Shrawon Kumar, Vijay Kumar Sinha, Dilip Kumar Jaiswal, Nishant Kumar, and Leshi Singh. Additionally, Ram Kripal Yadav, Nitish Mishra, Damodar Rawat, Sanjay Singh (Tiger), and Ashok Choudhary also took an oath as part of the government.

This cabinet expansion follows a significant electoral victory for the NDA in Bihar, where the alliance secured 202 out of 243 assembly seats in the recent elections. With this, the NDA achieved a substantial three-fourths majority, while the opposition coalition, Mahagathbandhan, managed to win only 35 assembly seats.

Political Landscape in Bihar

In the breakdown of seats won in the assembly elections, the Bharatiya Janata Party achieved 89 seats, while its coalition partner, the Janata Dal (United), secured 85 seats. Other allies included the Lok Janshakti Party (Ram Vilas) with 19 seats, Hindustani Awam Morcha (Secular) with five, and Rashtriya Lok Morcha with four seats.

Conversely, the opposition parties faced a significant setback, with the Rashtriya Janata Dal obtaining 25 seats and the Indian National Congress securing six. The CPI(ML)(L) won two seats, and both the Indian Inclusive Party and CPI(M) obtained one each. Additionally, the All India Majlis-E-Ittehadul Muslimeen gained five seats, while Bahujan Samaj Party managed one seat.

Notably, Nitish Kumar took oath as Chief Minister of Bihar for the tenth time on November 20, 2022, during a ceremony attended by Prime Minister Modi and other prominent NDA leaders. Following Kumar’s recent resignation from the Bihar Legislative Council on March 30, 2023, speculations of political transitions emerged as he prepared to assume a seat in the Rajya Sabha.

New Leadership Structure in the State

Samrat Choudhary’s swearing-in as the first-ever BJP Chief Minister of Bihar marks the end of Nitish Kumar’s 21-year leadership. To establish a balanced power structure, senior JD(U) members Vijay Kumar Choudhary and Bijendra Prasad Yadav were appointed as Deputy Chief Ministers.

Choudhary’s recent confidence vote in the 243-member Bihar legislative assembly affirmed the stability and unity of the NDA coalition, signalling a positive political transition following Kumar’s resignation from the Chief Minister’s position. This vote of confidence was approved with ease, showcasing the coalition’s collective support for Choudhary’s leadership.

The calm within the NDA suggests a cohesive approach, positioning the alliance for governance in the upcoming legislative sessions. The stability of the new cabinet is anticipated to address various issues concerning the state and its citizens effectively, thereby reinforcing the NDA’s strategic objectives in Bihar.
