The CSR Journal Magazine

During a recent event in Gothenburg, Prime Minister Narendra Modi reaffirmed that terrorism represents a serious threat to humanity. He addressed the challenges faced globally and extended his thanks to Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson for the support given to India following the Pahalgam terror attack. The Prime Minister highlighted the importance of collaboration between democracies like India and Sweden in today’s precarious international landscape.

In his remarks at the CEO Round Table, PM Modi stated, “Both India and Sweden agree that terrorism poses a grave challenge to all of humanity.” He noted that the backing during the aftermath of the Pahalgam attack is valued, and he articulated a shared commitment to combat terrorism and its sponsors. The attack, which took place on April 22, 2025, resulted in the tragic loss of 26 lives, including 25 Indian nationals and one Nepali citizen.

The Indian government launched Operation Sindoor in response to the incident, targeting nine terrorist camps in Pakistan and Pakistan Occupied Jammu and Kashmir during the nights of May 6 and 7. This military action reflects India’s proactive approach to addressing security threats stemming from terrorism.

Defence Cooperation Between India and Sweden

Further addressing the joint initiatives between the two countries, PM Modi pointed to the expanding nexus in the defence sector as a key indicator of bilateral relations. He emphasised that the collaboration is evolving from a simple buyer-seller dynamic to a comprehensive industrial partnership. This shift is characterised by Swedish companies establishing production facilities in India, enhancing long-term ties.

PM Modi remarked, “Our cooperation in the defence sector is continuously expanding,” pointing out that the current undertakings signify a deepening relationship beyond mere procurement. This commitment to mutual growth illustrates the robust nature of bilateral relations between the two nations.

Additionally, Prime Minister Modi acknowledged the presence of Ursula von der Leyen, the President of the European Commission, during the event. He referenced her previous visit to India in January, emphasising the significance of that trip in improving relations between India and the European Union.

Recognition and Future Trade Opportunities

During his visit to Sweden, PM Modi received the prestigious “Royal Order of Polar Star Commander Grand Cross,” an esteemed honour awarded by Sweden to foreign heads of government. This award, presented on May 18, marks the 31st international accolade received by the Indian Prime Minister.

He elaborated on the India-EU Free Trade Agreement (FTA), conveying optimism about the opportunities it will generate for industries, investors, and innovators. PM Modi described the FTA as having the potential to create significant avenues for growth, reflecting a robust partnership between India and the European Union.

Concluding his address at the CEO Round Table, PM Modi reiterated that the India-EU FTA is a substantial step towards maximising collaborative potential. The Prime Minister articulated that the engagements during this visit will bring about constructive developments in economic and strategic relations.

Following his commitments in Sweden, PM Modi is set to continue his five-nation tour, with Norway being the next destination. The discussions in Gothenburg are expected to pave the way for deeper bilateral engagements in various sectors.
