Mahesh Tutorials Closes 33 Coaching Centres in Maharashtra, Impacting 2,500 Students

The CSR Journal Magazine

Mahesh Tutorials recently announced the unexpected closure of 33 coaching centres across Maharashtra, affecting approximately 2,500 students. This decision has left students and parents in disarray as it occurred midway through the academic year. Reports indicate that admissions for the 2026-27 academic year had already been completed, with fees collected from parents just prior to the centres shutting down.

The decision to cease operations was based on an internal meeting held by MT Educare, the organisation behind Mahesh Tutorials, on July 7, which culminated in the suspension of all activities starting July 10. This abrupt move not only impacts students but also teachers and non-teaching staff who have been left without jobs or a clear future.

Many parents are currently seeking guidance on the situation, particularly regarding the fees paid for courses and the academic prospects for their children. Reports suggest that some parents are requesting fee audits and pro-rata refunds to address their concerns.

Ongoing Financial Troubles at MT Educare

The timing of the closures raises significant concerns, as MT Educare has been navigating the Corporate Insolvency Resolution Process initiated by the National Company Law Tribunal (NCLT) since December 2022. The company has faced mounting financial challenges, with the most recent audit report allegedly revealing losses and outstanding debts exceeding Rs 74.29 crore.

In addition to the company’s difficulties, the NCLT initiated personal insolvency proceedings against Mahesh Shetty, the promoter of MT Educare, in 2024. This was linked to a default related to loans for which he acted as a personal guarantor. The combination of these financial strains has contributed to the decision to shut down the coaching centres.

In light of these events, many affected families have expressed concern about the education of their children and the financial implications of the sudden closure. Parents are now challenged to find alternative arrangements as they seek clarity from the organisation.

Arihant Academy’s Response to the Situation

Arihant Academy has stepped in to accommodate some of the affected students, offering seats based on humanitarian considerations. However, the academy has categorically denied any allegations of a corporate takeover, merger, or purchase of MT Educare. Their assistance is presented as a goodwill gesture amidst the turmoil facing the students.

The sudden closure of Mahesh Tutorials has transformed what should have been a smooth academic year into a pressing issue for students and parents alike. Those who had structured their learning around Mahesh Tutorials are now in a race against time to secure new classes and educators, adding to their mounting stress.

The ongoing situation continues to develop as affected families seek answers and viable solutions. There is a palpable uncertainty in the air as students and parents navigate the ramifications of the abrupt closure, with the future of many now hanging in the balance.
