PM Modi Advocates Civic Satyagraha for Economic Resilience Amid Global Challenges

The CSR Journal Magazine

In Hyderabad on May 10, Prime Minister Narendra Modi articulated a modern interpretation of patriotism, urging Indian citizens to participate in a collective movement aimed at strengthening the nation’s economic resilience. Against the backdrop of global supply chain disruptions and increasing prices due to international conflicts, the Prime Minister framed the current crisis as a test of national character rather than a mere governmental challenge.

PM Modi stated, “Patriotism is not only about the willingness to sacrifice one’s life on the border.” He outlined that in today’s context, patriotism encompasses responsible living and fulfilling one’s duties to the nation in everyday life.

His address served as a strategic guide for what he termed “economic self-defence,” encouraging citizens to alter their consumption habits to bolster the financial stability of the nation.

Encouraging Sustainable Transportation Practices

In an effort to tackle the volatility of fuel prices, PM Modi recommended a paradigm shift in transportation habits. He urged citizens to minimise petrol and diesel usage by utilising metro and public transport systems wherever possible. For necessary private travel, he advocated for car-pooling, and for the transportation of goods, he suggested a preference for railways.

The Prime Minister also highlighted the need to adopt electric vehicles as an environmentally friendly alternative. He reflected on the efficiency observed during the COVID-19 pandemic, calling for a revival of virtual infrastructure that could simultaneously lower the national carbon footprint and reduce energy costs.

In a direct plea, PM Modi encouraged citizens to act as “guardians of the Rupee” by being cautious with their foreign exchange outflows. His call included a request to avoid unnecessary foreign luxuries such as overseas vacations, advocating instead for domestic tourism and local celebrations.

Promoting Local Production and Sustainable Practices

Furthermore, the Prime Minister urged the public to opt for Made-in-India and locally manufactured products, particularly in everyday items like shoes, bags, and accessories. He also encouraged families to decrease their consumption of edible oils, positing that this could contribute positively to both personal well-being and the national economy.

Focusing on the agricultural sector, PM Modi appealed to farmers to embrace natural farming methods. He endorsed a reduction of chemical use by fifty per cent, positioning Indian farmers as crucial participants in the pursuit of environmental sustainability and economic autonomy.

In his closing remarks, PM Modi reiterated that despite the global uncertainties, India’s strength lies in the “micro-efforts” of its 1.4 billion citizens. He conveyed that the future of India’s growth would not solely depend on government policies but also on the collective choices made by individuals at petrol stations, jewellery outlets, and dining tables across the nation.
