“What mistake did I commit?”: Pappu Yadav Defends Controversial Remarks on Women’s Reservation Bill

The CSR Journal Magazine

Pappu Yadav, the independent Member of Parliament from Purnea, defended his recent comments regarding the Women’s Reservation Bill, expressing confusion over the need for an apology. He questioned whether he had made any mistake for which an apology was warranted, reiterating his commitment to protecting women in politics.

Speaking to ANI on April 24, Yadav stated that his fight was for the welfare of women in India, specifically referencing his responsibility towards the daughters of the nation. He maintained that if his statements have caused any distress, he is open to accepting responsibility, but he demanded clarity on whom he should apologise to and for what reasons.

Yadav highlighted his dedication to ensuring the safety and dignity of women entering the political arena, asserting that he would go to great lengths to safeguard them. He emphasised the importance of maintaining respect for women in politics, especially in response to criticism directed at him.

Allegations Against Political Leaders

Further expanding on his comments, Yadav alleged that many political leaders and influential figures exploit young girls, referencing the ongoing issues of sexual violence against minors. He alluded to notorious cases such as that of Jeffrey Epstein, suggesting that these incidents reflect a broader issue within Indian politics.

Yadav stated, “The world knows that after the Epstein case, nothing is left,” asserting the prevalence of exploitation and abuse within political circles. He expressed his readiness to apologise multiple times if it would protect the dignity of women, but he made it clear that he would continue to speak out against what he perceives as the exploitation of women by politicians.

This controversy follows a series of statements made by Yadav, which have elicited strong reactions and have led the Bihar State Commission for Women to take note of his remarks. In response to the objections raised against him, he questioned the credibility of those issuing notices and their affiliations, suggesting that critics should reflect on their own behaviours.

Political Spectrum and Women’s Issues

In his comments, Yadav also indicated that many male politicians are complicit in creating an environment that makes it difficult for women to enter politics without facing exploitation. He called for a more rigorous examination of politicians’ behaviours and motives, claiming that 70 to 80 per cent of politicians engage in unseemly activities.

“If my phone has any incriminating material, then check it as well,” he challenged, implying that scrutiny should not be limited to his remarks alone. He expanded on his claims of systemic exploitation, stating that unsavoury practices are rampant in political circles, obstructing genuine progress for women in governance.

Yadav ended his remarks by affirming his commitment to advocating for women’s issues, while questioning why he is being targeted for raising these critical concerns. He suggested that the ongoing debates surrounding women’s representation in politics have often been undermined by those who seek to exploit women rather than empower them.
