Pakistan’s Mediation Push in US-Iran Conflict Stalls Amid Rising Diplomatic Pressure

The CSR Journal Magazine

Recently, Pakistan sought to assume a pivotal role as a mediator in the ongoing US-Iran conflict. Despite its working relationships with both nations and a vested interest in securing oil tanker routes through the Strait of Hormuz, Pakistan’s initiative has reportedly not gained traction. Iran has declined to engage in talks on Pakistani soil, leading to criticism from various analysts.

Additionally, Pakistan’s defence pact with Saudi Arabia, a nation significantly impacted by Iranian actions, has complicated its diplomatic manoeuvres. This situation has reportedly caused dissatisfaction among both Iran and its Gulf allies, including Saudi Arabia, whose relations with Pakistan are said to be under strain.

Pakistan’s attempts to mediate have been characterised primarily by its role as a messenger. For instance, on March 25, it communicated a US ceasefire proposal to Iran, which included demands related to Iran’s nuclear programme. However, Iran’s swift counteroffer indicated a rejection of Pakistan’s mediating role, further complicating Islamabad’s diplomatic endeavours.

Comparison with India’s Strategic Approach

India’s response to the Iran war contrasts sharply with Pakistan’s. Since the conflict’s onset on February 28, India has strategically diversified its oil sources, focusing on safeguarding its energy interests without overextending itself diplomatically. This approach has reportedly positioned India unfavourably in light of Pakistan’s mediation efforts.

External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar has underscored India’s stance, stating that the nation will not engage in geopolitics as a mere intermediary. The contrasting strategies have demonstrated Pakistan’s challenges in navigating complex international relations during a high-stakes conflict.

While Pakistan’s overt attempts to mediate have not materialised into successful dialogue, India’s cautious approach has helped it avoid potential traps associated with alliances that could compromise its strategic interests.

Economic Implications of the Diplomatic Situation

Compounding Pakistan’s diplomatic dilemmas are significant economic pressures. The United Arab Emirates has called on Pakistan to repay a $3.5 billion (Rs 2.9 lakh crore) loan immediately. This demand reportedly stems from dissatisfaction regarding Islamabad’s perceived closeness to Iran in light of the ongoing conflict.

The UAE’s concerns are heightened due to Iran’s retaliatory measures, which have included missile strikes aimed at UAE territory since the conflict began. The UAE’s insistence on loan repayment adds further strain to Pakistan’s economy, which is already struggling with high fuel prices and cuts to government spending.

Already burdened by an economic crisis, Pakistan’s attempt to act as a mediator may only exacerbate its financial woes, making it increasingly reliant on foreign loans while navigating strained relations with its Gulf partners. The fallout from its mediation efforts illustrates the limitations of Islamabad’s influence in the region.

Conclusion: A Complex Situation for Pakistan

In summary, Pakistan’s ambition to play a key role in mediating the Iran conflict has encountered significant hurdles, leaving the nation facing criticism and economic challenges. The contrasting strategies adopted by India further highlight the difficulties Pakistan experiences in establishing itself as an influential player in international diplomacy.

The current landscape underscores the necessity for careful navigation of geopolitical relations while managing domestic economic pressures. With ongoing tensions and limited success in diplomatic initiatives, Pakistan finds itself in a precarious position as it strives to redefine its role amid a multifaceted crisis.
