The recent interaction between comedians Samay Raina and Sharon Verma during an episode of India’s Got Latent Season 2 has ignited significant controversy. The exchange, rooted in jokes about their respective backgrounds from Bihar and Kashmir, has drawn ire from many social media users after clips surfaced publicly.

The exchange commenced when Raina introduced Verma with a quip regarding her Bihar roots. He remarked, “She is from Bihar. She is so Bihari; she thinks ‘Ebola’ means someone said something.” Verma reciprocated by joking about Raina’s Kashmiri heritage, stating, “Samay is so Kashmiri; he loves getting stoned.” This response was perceived by some as a reference to the stone-pelting that has been associated with unrest in the Kashmir region.

As the banter progressed, Raina talked about migration from Bihar to Mumbai in pursuit of employment opportunities. He stated, “Sharon Verma is a Bihari who came to Mumbai in search of a job. Just Bihari things.” Verma countered with a sharp reply, saying, “At least, I left my state by my choice,” seemingly alluding to the exodus of Kashmiri Pandits from the region during the 1990s genocide.

Public Reaction and Criticism

The clips of their exchange circulated widely on social media, leading to criticisms aimed at both comedians. Many users argued that the remarks transitioned from light-hearted banter to insensitivity regarding regional identities, migration, and the historical suffering of Kashmiri Pandits. This prompted an ongoing debate among viewers about the appropriateness of their humour concerning serious social issues.

The incident has since catalysed a broader discussion online regarding the dynamics between Bihar and Kashmir. Audience reactions are divided, with some viewing the exchange as amicable roast comedy, while others perceive it as a disrespectful take on grim historical events.

The show featured other panelists, including Orry, Archana Puran Singh, and Nishant Suri, adding to the public interest surrounding this controversial segment.

Political Responses to the Incident

In light of the controversy, BJP leader Ram Kadam has publicly condemned Raina’s comments, accusing him of hurting sentiments for the sake of publicity. During a recent press interview, Kadam remarked that certain individuals intentionally make inflammatory statements to attract attention.

“Some people deliberately make controversial remarks solely to gain publicity. Their sole objective is to become famous,” Kadam stated. He emphasised the importance of respecting the deities of Sanatan Hinduism and the experiences of Kashmiri Pandits, arguing that such topics should not be treated lightly or used as fodder for jokes.

“Kadam further asserted that someone cannot make offensive remarks and then simply apologise, highlighting the notion that publicity gained from such incidents is unjustified,” he added.

Additionally, Kadam is not alone in his sentiment; various political figures, including Sanjay Nirupam from Shiv Sena, Anand Dubey from Sena UBT, and Bihar’s Education Minister Mithilesh Tiwari, have also expressed their views about the comedians’ controversial remarks as the situation continues to unfold.
