Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari has stated that 33,000 fans who purchased tickets for the tumultuous Lionel Messi event will receive refunds. During his address on National Sports Day, Adhikari confirmed that the funding for these refunds will come from the state sports budget. The event, which took place at Yuva Bharati Stadium on December 13, 2025, was reportedly marred by disarray, leading to fans demanding compensation for their tickets, priced at Rs 4,000 and Rs 6,000.

Details of the Messi Event and Fan Reaction

The occasion in December was intended to be a celebration, but quickly devolved into chaos. Allegations have emerged that Aroop Biswas, the Sports Minister from the Trinamool Congress government, played a significant role in exacerbating the disorganisation. Following the incident, many attendees expressed their dissatisfaction and sought refunds for their ticket purchases. Adhikari addressed these concerns during a special event at Nabanna, commemorating the birth anniversary of Major Dhyan Chand, a celebrated figure in hockey.

While explaining his intentions, Adhikari noted, “Messi has a huge fan base. It is my wish to ensure that the money paid by these 33,000 sports enthusiasts is refunded.” He added that the refund process has already been initiated internally, and he hopes to resolve the matter promptly for the benefit of the fans.

The National Sports Day event also featured prominent figures including former hockey player Gurbux Singh and Sports Minister Indranil Khan. During this ceremony, accomplished athletes were recognised, and some were provided with appointment letters, signalling a commitment to enhancing sports in the region.

Criticism of Previous Administration’s Handling of Sports

During his address, Chief Minister Adhikari took the opportunity to criticise the previous administration for its lack of attention to the sports sector. He highlighted an unexpected situation where paperwork for several athletes receiving appointment letters had remained unattended for 11 years. Adhikari pointed out that West Bengal’s representation in major sports events like the Olympics and Asian Games has declined, especially in contrast to states such as Odisha and Jharkhand that have consistently sent participants.

According to the Chief Minister, while Bengal is rich in talent and dedication, it has been hindered by inadequate systems and political interferences within sports organisations. “Why must every sports sector or organisation be controlled by politics?” he questioned, emphasising the need for a transformative change in the management of sports in the state.

Future Plans for Sports Development in West Bengal

Looking ahead, Adhikari outlined a comprehensive roadmap for the development of sports in West Bengal, announcing a substantial budget allocation of Rs 400 crore for the sector. However, he clarified that this budget will cover an eight-month period rather than a full year. He indicated plans to establish mini indoor stadiums across all 294 assembly constituencies, including facilities for tennis, badminton, and gymnasiums.

Adhikari acknowledged the challenges of constructing 294 stadiums in one year but assured that 100 new stadiums will be built this year to invigorate the sports infrastructure in the state. He lamented the current poor condition of existing facilities, attributing their neglect to the previous government’s lack of commitment towards sports development.

With these plans, Adhikari aims to revitalise sports in West Bengal and foster a supportive environment for athletes, ensuring that the state regains its stature in national and international sports events.
