A Dutch mental health and addiction institute has issued a red alert regarding ecstasy pills designed to resemble the face of US President Donald Trump. The Trimbos Institute, based in Utrecht, announced that a number of these pills have recently been tested at drug-testing centres across the Netherlands, revealing a dangerously high concentration of para-methoxymethamphetamine (PMMA).

The institute strongly advised against the consumption of these pills, emphasising the potential health risks involved. “Absolutely do not use these pills,” the Trimbos Institute stated in its warning, highlighting the serious implications of PMMA usage.

Characteristics of the Pill

The pills are notable for their design, featuring an image that resembles Trump’s face on one side, while the reverse side is stamped with the words “Trump” and “NL.” Pictures released by the institute show pills available in various colours, including green and yellow, adding to their concerning allure.

PMMA is a substance chemically similar to MDMA, the primary psychoactive ingredient in traditional ecstasy. However, the Trimbos Institute noted that PMMA can have a delayed onset of effects, which may not include the expected stimulating sensations associated with MDMA. This delay poses an increased risk of overdose, as users may consume additional pills in an attempt to achieve the desired effects.

Reported symptoms resulting from PMMA consumption include nausea, increased heart rate, overheating, as well as more severe effects like seizures and loss of consciousness. In extreme cases, the substance can lead to serious heart complications and even fatalities.

Current Situation Regarding Usage

Although the Netherlands has laws prohibiting the production, distribution, and consumption of ecstasy, the drug remains prevalent, particularly among party-goers at clubs and festivals. A report released by the Dutch government in 2024 indicated that approximately 550,000 individuals had consumed ecstasy in 2022, identifying it as a commonly used recreational drug.

The Trimbos Institute is responsible for operating a national drug-testing network, which consists of 12 organisations and 34 testing locations spread throughout the country. This network plays a crucial role in monitoring and assessing drug quality and potency.

The current Trump-themed pills are not the first instance of ecstasy tablets inspired by the US president. In 2017, German authorities confiscated around 5,000 carrot-coloured ecstasy tablets shaped like Trump’s head. It was believed that these were marketed online with the slogan “Trump makes partying great again,” indicating a previous trend linking the ecstasy drug with the public persona of the US leader.
