The CSR Journal Magazine

Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif engaged in separate discussions with Iranian and Qatari leaders on the evening of July 10, 2026, to address the stalled negotiations between the United States and Iran. The discussions aimed to alleviate regional tensions heightened by recent conflicts and attacks. During these talks, Sharif expressed significant apprehension regarding the increasing instability within the region and urged all parties to exercise restraint.

In his conversation with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian, Sharif highlighted the urgent necessity of re-establishing peace and stability. According to a statement from the Prime Minister’s Office, he emphasised the protection of the peace process initiated under the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding (MoU). Sharif called for collective measures to safeguard the gains made toward peace in recent months.

Sharif stressed the importance of adhering to the provisions outlined in the Islamabad MoU, asserting it as a crucial framework for fostering mutual understanding and cooperation within the region. He reassured Pezeshkian of Pakistan’s commitment to maintaining an “honest and sincere role” in promoting dialogue and supporting peace initiatives.

Highlights of the Conversations

Pezeshkian acknowledged Sharif’s efforts, expressing gratitude for the attendance of Pakistani officials at the funeral ceremony for the late Iranian leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. The discussions also touched upon the implementation of agreements made during Pezeshkian’s visit to Islamabad in June, with both leaders agreeing on the need for expedited action to enhance bilateral cooperation across various sectors.

The two officials committed to remaining in close contact and continuing consultations on mutual interests and regional stability. This consensus reflects a shared dedication to fortifying ties and addressing ongoing challenges.

In a separate call with Qatar’s Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, Sharif reiterated his concerns regarding escalating tensions in the region. He reaffirmed Pakistan’s solidarity with Qatar’s citizens amidst recent attacks and stressed the importance of restraint from all parties involved to maintain regional peace.

Emphasis on Diplomatic Engagement

Sharif expressed gratitude to the Emir for his unwavering support of the peace initiatives culminating in the Islamabad MoU. The conversation between the two leaders underscored the necessity of sustained diplomatic engagement and dialogue, as well as adherence to the commitments established under the peace memorandum.

Following the signing of the Islamabad MoU on June 18, aimed at reinstating peace in West Asia, technical discussions moved forward on June 21 in Switzerland, where Pakistan and Qatar acted as mediators. Sharif’s discussions with both Iranian and Qatari leaders were part of a broader effort to maintain the momentum of this diplomatic process and contribute to regional stability.

In light of the current geopolitical climate, these conversations reflect Pakistan’s ongoing involvement in fostering dialogue and collaboration among nations in the region, aiming to reduce tensions and promote lasting peace. Continued engagement with Iran and Qatar illustrates a concerted effort to anchor stability in West Asia and beyond.
