Over 4.5 Crore Indians Enrol in Higher Education With Private Colleges Dominating

The CSR Journal Magazine

The higher education landscape in India has shown substantial growth, with total student enrolment reaching approximately 4.5 crore for the academic year 2023-24, as per the All India Survey on Higher Education (AISHE) report. The enrolment figure stood at 4,50,01,123, reflecting an increase of around 3.7 lakh students or 0.8 per cent compared to the previous year, 2022-23. This upward trend demonstrates a 31.5 per cent increase in enrolment since the 2014-15 academic year, indicating a steady expansion of universities, colleges, and other educational institutions nationwide.

Private Colleges’ Dominance in Enrolment

Among the institutions surveyed, it was found that out of 46,468 colleges responding, only 7,944 were government establishments, which account for merely 17.1 per cent of the total colleges. These government colleges enrol about 88.9 lakh students, representing 28.6 per cent of the college population. In contrast, privately managed colleges dominate the sector, encompassing about 38,524 institutions, which comprise 82.9 per cent of the total colleges and collectively accommodate around 2.2 crore students. This scenario highlights the increasing reliance of India’s higher educational framework on private institutions to cater to the growing student demand.

Furthermore, the overwhelming presence of private colleges suggests that they play a pivotal role in shaping the educational environment in the country, indicating a shift towards private sector involvement in vital educational services. This trend reflects a broader context of evolving educational preferences among students and stakeholders alike.

Gender Participation and Trends in Higher Education

Gender participation in higher education has shown admirable progress, with a reported 2.2 crore women enrolled in various courses for the 2023-24 academic year. This marks a notable increase of 42.2 per cent compared to the figures from 2014-15. Women now constitute nearly half of the enrolment in undergraduate courses, surpassing their male counterparts at the postgraduate level. Specifically, female students comprise 49.5 per cent of undergraduate enrolment and a remarkable 56.2 per cent of postgraduate enrolment, demonstrating significant strides toward gender parity in education.

The rising female enrolment signals changing societal attitudes towards women’s education and participation in higher education, fostering an environment that encourages more women to pursue academic and professional goals in a diverse array of fields.

Key Statistics and Regional Concentrations in Enrolment

The preference for undergraduate degrees continues to dominate the educational choices of students, with nearly 3.5 crore students, or 76.8 per cent of the total, engaged in pursuing these programmes. Among these, the Bachelor of Arts (BA) remains the most favoured course, attracting around 1.3 crore enrolments, followed by Bachelor of Science (BSc) with 53.4 lakh, Bachelor of Engineering (BTech/BE) with 43.2 lakh, and Bachelor of Commerce (BCom) with 40.8 lakh. At the postgraduate level, the Master of Arts (MA) leads with 22.6 lakh students, followed closely by Master of Science (MSc) and Master of Business Administration (MBA), enrolling 9.9 lakh and 9.6 lakh students respectively.

Moreover, student enrolment remains concentrated within specific states. The six states reporting the highest enrolments are Uttar Pradesh (72.7 lakh), Maharashtra (46.5 lakh), Tamil Nadu (35.8 lakh), Madhya Pradesh (27.7 lakh), Karnataka (27.6 lakh), and Bihar (27.6 lakh). Collectively, these states account for an impressive 52.9 per cent of the total higher education enrolment in India.

In summary, while 3.18 crore students are enrolled in colleges, another 1.08 crore are attending universities, with around 23 lakh studying in dedicated institutions such as polytechnics and nursing schools. This data underscores the complex and evolving nature of India’s higher education system.
