Tejashwi Yadav, the Leader of the Opposition in Bihar, has called for a judicial investigation into the use of AK-47 bullets during a student protest in Siwan. He emphasised the need to ascertain who authorised the police to utilise firearms against demonstrators and held the state government accountable for the incident. Yadav questioned whether senior police officers or the state’s Home Minister issued the orders for the shooting.

In a statement to ANI, Yadav demanded clarity from the Bihar government, asking, “On whose orders was the action taken? Was it based on directions from the Superintendent of Police or the Home Minister of Bihar?” He urged state officials to come forward and clarify the events leading up to the shooting, stressing the necessity for a thorough judicial inquiry.

Yadav also raised concerns about the implications of police actions, indicating that targeting protesters is not a trivial matter. He challenged the authorities to provide transparency regarding the decision-making process behind the use of deadly force against unarmed students.

Warning of Mass Protest

Yadav warned of a significant public agitation if the government fails to withdraw charges against the arrested students and release them promptly. He remarked, “If by this evening these actions are not taken, we will organise a massive agitation.” This statement reflects growing unrest among the student body and a heightened political climate.

He claimed that the shooting was directed at students, asserting that three individuals sustained injuries from the gunfire. Yadav specifically noted that the use of AK-47 rounds is unprecedented in such situations across India, including in major cities like Delhi. According to him, this incident marks a troubling escalation in police response to protests.

Yadav also highlighted that he had personally visited the injured students, expressing concern over ongoing arrests despite prior assurances to the public regarding the withdrawal of charges against protesters. He demanded accountability from the Bihar government regarding the conditions under which students were taken into custody.

Calls for Government Transparency

Yadav further urged the government to provide specific information regarding the arrests, including the legal charges against detained students. He stated, “The Bihar government should clarify which students have been apprehended and the sections under which they have been charged. This information must be made public.” Such steps are seen as vital for restoring trust and transparency in the government’s handling of the situation.

The RJD leader critiqued the unprecedented use of AK-47s during a student protest, asserting that many significant protests in India had never seen such violent measures. He remarked, “Many major movements have occurred in the country, yet until today, AK-47 bullets have not been fired,” while questioning the government’s motives in the situation.

Yadav called for Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary to clarify the circumstances surrounding the shooting, particularly since the Home portfolio falls under his purview. He stated, “The Chief Minister must explain on whose orders the shots were fired and what exactly happened.” His comments reflect a demand for accountability at the highest levels of Bihar’s government.

Additionally, he questioned whether standard operational protocols were adhered to during the handling of the protests. Yadav argued that proper procedures must be followed in crowd control situations, emphasising that AK-47s would not be deployed without explicit command from higher authorities.

With the ongoing examination irregularities and NEET paper leak controversy further fuelling public dissent, the incident in Siwan has intensified scrutiny on the state government. Political tensions remain high as multiple opposition parties are calling for accountability and appropriate actions against those who have oversaw this controversial incident.
