The Lok Sabha witnessed a halt in proceedings shortly after it commenced on July 24, 2026, due to a significant disruption caused by Opposition members. Protests erupted as lawmakers entered the Well of the House, vociferously raising slogans concerning the NEET-UG paper leak issue, leading Speaker Om Birla to intervene.

Speaker Birla made an appeal to all members present, urging them to cooperate during the designated Question Hour. He stressed the importance of allowing for discussions and expressed hope that members would refrain from creating an impasse. Despite these appeals, protests continued, prompting the Speaker to announce an adjournment until 12 PM.

This incident marks a continuation of the pattern seen earlier in the Monsoon Session, characterised by repeated disruptions in both Houses of Parliament, as the Opposition consistently presses for dialogue regarding the controversies surrounding the NEET-UG examination.

Continued Opposition Demands

The calls for discussion stem from various issues within the education sector, notably the NEET-UG paper leak and the police action against student demonstrators. Opposition members are notably pressing for the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan amidst heightened tensions.

Earlier in the day, members of the INDIA bloc conducted a demonstration at Parliament’s Makar Dwar, where they displayed placards demanding the resignation of the Education Minister. The NDA, in response, has accused the Opposition of obstructing necessary debates on these pressing issues, thereby complicating the legislative process.

In recent statements, Prime Minister Narendra Modi underscored the government’s stern commitment to addressing the paper leaks, revealing that the Union Cabinet is set to consider a draft Bill aimed at establishing Fast-Track Courts and imposing stringent penalties for those found guilty of such offences.

Concerns Over Prime Minister’s Communication Approach

The day’s proceedings also saw Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge criticise Prime Minister Modi for opting to release a video message addressing the current unrest regarding examinations. Kharge has demanded a formal discussion in Parliament instead, suggesting that direct engagement would clarify the Prime Minister’s stance on the issue.

Kharge expressed his discontent with the nature of the Prime Minister’s communication, arguing that a video message does not equate to authentic dialogue within the legislative body. He emphasised that substantive discussion in Parliament would provide clarity on the matter.

Furthermore, Kharge reiterated that if the Prime Minister sought to convey important information, it should ideally occur during parliamentary sessions, allowing for cross-examination and better understanding among members, rather than through a recorded message released at unorthodox hours.

The ongoing tensions within Parliament continue to illustrate the significant divide between various parties, reflecting broader concerns regarding the handling of educational policies and student protests across the nation.
