Odisha Police Achieved Significant Success Against Naxalism, Says ADG Sanjeeb Panda

The CSR Journal Magazine

Sanjeeb Panda, the Additional Director General of Anti-Naxal Operations in Odisha, has stated that the state’s law enforcement agencies and security forces have made remarkable strides in addressing Left-wing extremism. In a recent discussion, he highlighted the vital role played by the Special Operations Group (SOG), Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), Border Security Force (BSF), and the intelligence community in executing coordinated operations effectively.

Statistics Illustrate Progress in Combating Naxal Activities

Panda reported that during the period of 2025-26, security forces successfully neutralized 27 Naxal operatives, with a notable 17 of these incidents occurring in Gariaband. Additionally, 78 Naxals surrendered to Odisha Police, while 42 opted to lay down their arms in the neighboring state of Chhattisgarh. Emphasizing the impact of these measures, he stated that eight districts within Odisha have been declared Naxal-free.

Casualties and Challenges Faced in the Fight Against Naxalism

In his remarks, Panda acknowledged the ultimate sacrifice made by security personnel in the fight against Naxalism, revealing that 239 officers have lost their lives during these operations. He noted that despite this grievous toll, the remaining presence of Naxals in the Kandhamal district has diminished significantly. He expressed gratitude towards the state’s Chief Minister for the guidance and support received in this ongoing battle against extremism.

Central Government’s Initiatives to Combat Naxalism

This announcement follows comments made by Union Home Minister Amit Shah, who recently praised the efforts of the Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led government in tackling Naxalism at the national level. Shah characterized Left-wing extremism as the “root cause of Red Terror” and noted that the government has been actively working to dismantle the narrative perpetuated by Naxal supporters, claiming that they represent the rights of marginalized tribal communities.

Targeted Initiatives to Foster Development in Affected Areas

Shah further indicated that areas previously under significant Naxal influence, such as Bastar, are witnessing a transition, with initiatives underway to establish schools and ration distribution centers in villages aimed at promoting development and stability. The government has outlined its strategic goal known as “Naxal Mukt Bharat” (Naxal-free India), targeting the eradication of Left-Wing Extremism (LWE) by March 31, 2026.
