Northern Railway Operates Special Trains in Kashmir Amid Adverse Weather Conditions

The CSR Journal Magazine

Northern Railway’s Jammu Division initiated special train services in the Kashmir Valley on July 24 to aid tourists and other passengers facing disruptions caused by heavy rains. This decision was prompted by the severe impact of inclement weather on road traffic, particularly affecting the National Highway, which has been a critical route for travellers in the region.

The official announcement detailed that these special trains were aimed at providing timely assistance for stranded passengers. The first service departed from Sangaldan (SGDN) at 13:45 hours, making scheduled stops at Banihal (BAHL) and Anantnag (ANT), before reaching its final destination of Srinagar (SINA) at 16:40 hours. Such operations were deemed necessary in light of ongoing weather challenges.

In its return trip, the same train left Srinagar at 17:00 hours and paused again at Banihal, with an estimated arrival at Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Katra (SVDK) at 20:15 hours. This initiative was part of a broader strategy to mitigate travel disruptions and maintain connectivity in the valley during adverse conditions.

Successful Implementation of Train Services

According to the Jammu Division, over 1,500 individuals utilised the special train services. This effort successfully provided a reliable alternative for those affected by road closures. The functioning railway network was highlighted as an efficient transportation option, enabling passengers to reach their destinations with minimal delay despite the circumstances.

The official release underlined the importance of these train services in maintaining a consistent travel schedule for residents and visitors alike. It also noted that a prior service had been run on July 23 from Srinagar to Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Katra, further showcasing the commitment to providing necessary transport during emergencies.

The emphasis placed on timely operations indicates a dedicated focus on addressing the logistical challenges posed by unpredictable weather patterns in the area. The railway proved to be a stabilising force for travel within the region, offering swift and secure transport options.

Official Statements Reflecting Commitment to Passenger Safety

Shri Uchit Singhal, Senior Divisional Commercial Manager of Jammu, spoke about the measures taken to ensure passenger convenience. He elaborated that prioritising safety and comfort was fundamental to their operations. The decision to deploy additional trains came rapidly as a response to heightened concerns regarding passenger welfare, attributed to road closures resulting from severe weather.

Mr Singhal encouraged passengers to check real-time information regarding train schedules using the NTES App, the IRCTC website, or by reaching out to the 139 helpline before travelling. This proactive communication was aimed at enhancing the overall passenger experience while navigating through the unpredictable conditions caused by the weather.

Overall, the Jammu Division has reasserted its ongoing commitment to serve the public, adapting to the evolving needs of passengers in challenging situations. The provision of special train services not only reflects operational readiness but also a firm dedication to ensure safe and efficient travel within the region.
