North Korea Rejects Quad’s Denuclearisation Call, Says It Will ‘Never’ Give Up Nukes

The CSR Journal Magazine

North Korea has firmly opposed the recent call for its denuclearisation made by the Quad nations. In a statement issued on May 28, the North Korean foreign ministry declared that the country will “never, ever” abandon its nuclear weapons programme. This assertion follows a joint statement by the foreign ministers of the Quadrilateral Security Dialogue, which includes India, Australia, Japan, and the United States, who gathered in New Delhi on May 23.

The Quad foreign ministers reaffirmed their commitment to the complete denuclearisation of North Korea, citing the need for Pyongyang to comply with relevant United Nations Security Council Resolutions (UNSCRs). This statement has been met with significant backlash from the North Korean government, which claims such actions infringe upon its sovereignty.

A spokesperson from North Korea’s foreign ministry accused the Quad of acting as a tool for the United States, asserting that their joint efforts serve the purpose of promoting US dominance globally. This criticism highlights the longstanding tensions between Pyongyang and Washington, as well as its allies.

Quad’s Denuclearisation Agenda

The Quad’s joint statement explicitly condemned North Korea’s development of ballistic missile technology and weapons of mass destruction. It expressed serious concerns regarding North Korea’s alleged illicit cyber activities, which reportedly fund its weapons programmes. The Quad members urged compliance with UNSCRs and emphasised the need for all UN member states to enforce sanctions on North Korea.

Furthermore, the Quad claimed that they will persist in their efforts to address any violations related to North Korea. The urgency of enforcing sanctions, particularly regarding arms and related materials, was highlighted in their statement, indicating a strong commitment to global non-proliferation efforts.

In addition to addressing arms proliferation, the Quad’s joint statement also focused on the growing defence collaborations between North Korea and other nations. The foreign ministers expressed alarm at this trend, asserting that it undermines the global non-proliferation regime. Their stated concerns reflect a broader effort to maintain regional and international stability.

Continued Tensions in the Region

The situation in North Korea remains fraught with tension, as the nation openly rejects the Quad’s “hostile stance.” North Korea has urged the Quad to cease what it describes as actions that exacerbate regional tensions and obstruct efforts towards peace and stability. The harsh rhetoric from Pyongyang underscores the ongoing volatility in inter-Korean and international relations.

Moreover, the Quad reasserted the importance of resolving issues related to abductions and similar human rights concerns. By doing so, they aim to emphasise the need for comprehensive dialogue concerning not only denuclearisation but also other pressing humanitarian issues.

As these diplomatic exchanges unfold, the international community continues to watch closely, given the broader implications for security in the Asia-Pacific region. The dialogue around denuclearisation remains a critical focal point as nations navigate complex geopolitical dynamics.
