Netanyahu Downplays Tensions with Trump Over Lebanon Comments

The CSR Journal Magazine

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has responded to reports of friction with US President Donald Trump following Trump’s admission of calling him “f***ing crazy” during a phone conversation concerning military actions in Lebanon. In an interview with CNBC on Wednesday, Netanyahu characterised the disagreements that arose between the two leaders as tactical rather than indicative of any deeper division.

On the subsequent day, Trump confirmed a report by Axios regarding his choice of words during what was described as a heated conversation aimed at preventing the collapse of delicate negotiations with Iran. Netanyahu remarked on this dynamic by stating, “We can disagree in the morning and find common ground by the afternoon,” emphasising the strong ties between the allies.

Details of the Controversial Phone Call

The tension reportedly escalated during a phone call that occurred as the United States was making efforts to contain escalating conflicts throughout the Middle East. Iran had reportedly halted indirect negotiations with the US in response to the Israeli military operations in Lebanon, including attacks linked to Hezbollah in Beirut.

During that call, Trump allegedly expressed frustration, stating to Netanyahu, “You’d be in prison if it weren’t for me. I’m saving your ass. Everybody hates you now. Everybody hates Israel because of this.” Subsequently, Trump clarified that while he was somewhat troubled by Israel’s ongoing actions, he was not enraged.

When questioned about the suggested rift with Trump, Netanyahu dismissed concerns of a significant breakdown, referencing the relationship as akin to that of a family where tactical disagreements occasionally occur. “But we always find a way to work them out, and we do so as great friends,” he noted.

Shared Concerns Over Iran

Much of Netanyahu’s interview focused on the perceived threat from Iran, which he identified as a significant risk to both Israel and the United States. He reiterated a united front with Trump regarding the necessity of preventing Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons.

Netanyahu stated, “Those include preventing Iran from getting a nuclear weapon and threatening Israel with it,” when discussing mutual goals with the US President. The Israeli Prime Minister expressed that he believes Iran’s leadership is experiencing deterioration due to ongoing conflicts and pressure, suggesting that internal instability is emerging within the country.

He refrained from speculating about the timeframe for potential regime change in Iran but maintained that there would be increasing challenges for its leadership.

Continuing Relationship Between Netanyahu and Trump

Despite the media speculation surrounding the tension, Netanyahu emphasised the continued strength of his relationship with Trump. He referred to Trump as Israel’s “greatest friend” and highlighted the years of cooperation enjoyed between Washington and Jerusalem.

The Israeli Prime Minister revealed that he frequently communicates with Trump, maintaining contact approximately every other day, stating, “I speak with him once every two days.” He further commended Trump’s handling of the Iranian threat, including strategies employed by the US, such as the naval blockade targeting Iranian ports.

As regional tensions remain high, the complexities of the ongoing conflict continue to unfold. Fighting between Israel and Hezbollah persists, despite Trump’s announcement of a partial ceasefire in Lebanon. Iran has linked the situation in Lebanon to broader negotiations with the Trump administration, asserting that sustainable agreements must address both issues.

On the same day, fighting escalated in the Gulf as Iran launched additional attacks on Kuwait, while US military operations conducted near the Strait of Hormuz heightened regional tensions even further.
