NCERT Finalises New Textbooks for Classes 1-9, Awaiting Two Releases by August

The CSR Journal Magazine

The National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) has announced that its new textbooks for Classes 1 to 9 are nearly ready for distribution, with only two books for Class 9 still pending release. Officials confirmed that the remaining textbooks are expected to be available by August, addressing concerns raised by students, parents, and teachers regarding the availability of educational materials as the academic year progresses.

Currently, textbooks for Classes 1 to 8 are accessible in both digital and print formats. Senior NCERT officials stated that the two pending Class 9 textbooks are in the final stages of preparation. This effort aligns with the National Curriculum Framework for School Education (NCF-SE) 2023, which aims to modernise and enhance the educational content provided to students.

This announcement arrives during a crucial time when schools across India have begun implementing revised textbooks developed under the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020. The policy aims to restructure education in the country towards a more holistic approach.

Future Changes for Upper Classes

Officials from NCERT have also clarified that there will be no immediate changes for students in Classes 10 and 11. These students will continue using the current textbooks through the academic session of 2026-27. The revised textbooks aligned with the new curriculum framework are scheduled for implementation in the 2027-28 academic session.

This decision has significant implications for educational institutions and students, as it ensures continuity in the learning process without the disruption of introducing new materials abruptly. Schools and educators will have the opportunity to gradually familiarise themselves with the revised content before it is officially adopted for the higher classes.

The stability of the current textbooks for these two classes means that teaching strategies and assessments can remain consistent during this transitional period. This approach aims to facilitate a smoother integration of educational changes in the future.

Reforms Under NEP 2020

The revision of textbooks falls under the purview of the National Curriculum Framework for School Education (NCF-SE) 2023, a vital aspect of the National Education Policy 2020. This curriculum framework is designed to enhance school education by focusing on competency-based learning, fostering flexibility, and promoting experiential learning opportunities.

As the implementation progresses for Classes 1 to 9, NCERT has indicated that schools will soon have nearly complete access to the newly revised educational materials. The final releases of the two Class 9 textbooks are expected to arrive in August, ensuring that schools can effectively engage students with updated contents.

This initiative is part of a broader strategy to ensure that the educational landscape in India is more reflective of contemporary needs and prepares students for future challenges. By emphasising a competency-based approach, the framework aims to equip students with practical skills and knowledge necessary for success in their later academic and professional endeavors.
