MP Kakali Ghosh Dastidar resigns from all TMC posts after attending CM Adhikari’s meeting

The CSR Journal Magazine

In a significant political development in West Bengal, Barasat MP Kakali Ghosh Dastidar has resigned from all her party posts, a day after attending a high-level administrative review meeting chaired by Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari in Kalyani. She has submitted her resignation letter to Subrata Bakshi, the state president of the Trinamool Congress.

The development follows a series of recent changes within the party structure. On May 15, Kakali was removed from her role as Chief Whip of the TMC Parliamentary Party in the Lok Sabha. She was replaced by Kalyan Banerjee, a decision taken by party supremo Mamata Banerjee after a meeting with party MPs at Kalighat.

Shortly after her removal, Kakali expressed her displeasure through an ambiguous post on social media, hinting at internal dissatisfaction.

Series of resignations before final exit

Even before stepping down from all party posts, Kakali had resigned as President of the Barasat Parliamentary District TMC unit. She also relinquished her leadership role in the party’s women’s wing, indicating growing discontent within the ranks.

Despite these developments, she attended the Chief Minister’s administrative meeting in Kalyani on Tuesday. Several Trinamool MLAs from North 24 Parganas were also present, including representatives from Deganga, Swarupnagar, Haroa, Baduria, Minakhan, and Basirhat constituencies.

CM claims Kakali voiced long-standing grievances

According to Chief Minister Adhikari, Kakali used the platform in Kalyani to openly express her long-standing grievances. He claimed that during previous administrative meetings under the TMC regime, she was not given adequate opportunity to voice her opinions.

Addressing the media, the Chief Minister stated that Kakali appeared “extremely satisfied” after being allowed to speak freely and even extended a handshake with him at the conclusion of the meeting.

Kakali Ghosh Dastidar shares a long political association with Mamata Banerjee, dating back to their days in student politics during the 1970s. While Mamata was active at Jogamaya Devi College as a Chhatra Parishad leader, Kakali was involved in student politics at Calcutta Medical College.

She remained a close associate of Mamata through her political rise since 1984, making her recent exit from party posts particularly significant.

Internal restructuring after poll setback

Interestingly, Kalyan Banerjee had stepped down as Chief Whip last August, after which Kakali was appointed to the role. However, following the party’s setback in the Assembly elections, signs of internal restructuring began to emerge.

Political observers suggest that Kalyan Banerjee’s reinstatement—reportedly due to his aggressive defence of the party during a challenging phase—may have contributed to Kakali’s dissatisfaction.

Kakali’s resignation from all party posts adds a new dimension to the evolving political landscape in West Bengal. Analysts believe the move could signal internal fissures within the Trinamool Congress, especially in the aftermath of electoral setbacks and ongoing organisational reshuffles.
