The Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (MDMK) General Secretary Vaiko has publicly condemned remarks allegedly made by Udhayanidhi Stalin, the Leader of the Opposition in Tamil Nadu, regarding actor Trisha Krishnan. Vaiko described the comments as “cheap and derogatory”, highlighting concerns over political decorum during a protest held in Thanjavur addressing the ongoing Cauvery water dispute.

During his speech, Udhayanidhi Stalin was reportedly interrupted by chants of “Trisha, Trisha” from the audience. Following a brief pause, he allegedly stated, “Whether the water reaches anywhere else or not, it should reach there,” before clarifying that his comments were directed solely at the Cauvery water issue.

Vaiko issued a strong statement, asserting that Udhayanidhi’s speech exceeded the bounds of acceptable political discourse and amounted to an unfair criticism of Chief Minister Joseph Vijay. He invoked the teachings of Thiruvalluvar’s classic work, ‘Thirukkural’, emphasising the importance of temperance in speech.

Political Context of the Comments

Vaiko further accused the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) of using the Cauvery issue for political advantage, stating that Udhayanidhi’s comments reduced his stature to that of an “insignificant political speaker.” He stressed the necessity for unity among Tamil Nadu’s political factions regarding the Cauvery rights, stating that the state’s interests should take precedence over individual political pursuits.

MDMK Principal Secretary and MP Durai Vaiko also joined in the criticism, expressing concern over Udhayanidhi’s remarks and their implications for the treatment of women. He emphasised that the platform was not meant for personal grievances and labelled the comments as highly inappropriate and damaging.

Vaiko insisted that political leaders need to handle sensitive topics with care, urging Udhayanidhi to reflect on his words and their potential impact.

DMK’s Response to Allegations

In response to the backlash, DMK MP TR Baalu defended Udhayanidhi Stalin, stating that he had not made any specific reference to Trisha. Baalu labelled the accusations as unfounded and asserted that the remarks were misconstrued. He maintained that Udhayanidhi’s comments were misinterpreted and that no personal attacks had been intended.

Meanwhile, the women’s wing of the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam filed a complaint with the police, claiming that Udhayanidhi’s remarks implied a double entendre regarding Trisha. In light of the complaints, local law enforcement took action, leading to Udhayanidhi’s detention for questioning regarding the allegations.

The controversy surrounding the statements highlights ongoing political tensions in the state and underscores the importance of responsible political rhetoric, especially concerning sensitive issues and individuals. Efforts to resolve the Cauvery dispute are ongoing, and the situation continues to unfold as all parties respond to the escalated discourse.
