Manchester City Star Jeremy Doku Welcomes Baby Boy ‘Praise’ Ahead of World Cup

The CSR Journal Magazine

Jeremy Doku, the Manchester City winger and Belgian international, has become a father for the first time. He and his wife, Shireen, welcomed a baby boy named Praise. The news was confirmed by the Belgian Football Association (BFA) on June 23. Doku had temporarily left the national team’s camp in the USA to be present for the birth of his son.

Prior to the crucial FIFA World Cup group stage match against Iran, Doku received permission to travel to London for this significant family milestone. The BFA issued a statement explaining that Doku was informed about the imminent birth just before the match. Coordination with the medical staff of the Belgian national team allowed for his departure, ensuring that he could support his wife during this important time.

Doku’s fitness has been a concern, as he had been suffering from a respiratory infection that prevented him from training with the team in Los Angeles. The team doctor, Brahim Hacene, noted that Doku was cleared for the cross-Atlantic flight and was in suitable condition to be with his family during labor. Hacene affirmed that Doku had been on modified medication for several days, allowing for a safe journey. He further added that mother, father, and baby were all doing well. Doku is expected to return to the squad in Seattle the following evening.

The Belgian national team’s performance has faced criticism, with fans expressing frustration after draws against both Egypt and Iran in their initial matches. Doku’s decision to leave the camp during this time drew responses from some commentators, including a television presenter who faced backlash for suggesting that fathers were unnecessary during childbirth. This controversy resulted in the broadcaster issuing a public apology and suspending the individual involved.

Doku’s return to the team comes as they prepare for an essential match against New Zealand on Friday, as they aim to improve their standing in the tournament. His personal milestone adds a layer of complexity to his professional commitments as the World Cup progresses.
