The Saket court in New Delhi has remanded hotel cook Keshav Negi to two days of police custody as part of the ongoing investigation into the devastating Malviya Nagar fire incident. This tragedy, which occurred on June 3, resulted in 21 fatalities and left 28 individuals injured, including foreign nationals. Allegations regarding the fire’s cause primarily point to a leak from cooking gas, although differing opinions within the legal proceedings suggest a potential short circuit as an alternative cause.

Accusations Against Hotel Owner and Cook

The owner of Flourish Stays Hotel, Lovkesh Bajaj, is also currently in police custody, facing multiple charges under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). These charges include culpable homicide not amounting to murder, mischief by fire, and negligent conduct with fire. Authorities have expressed that Bajaj’s continued detention is vital to uncover the full scope of the investigation, particularly as they search for additional parties, including the hotel manager and accountant.

During the initial court appearance, Keshav Negi was presented before Judicial Magistrate First Class (JMFC) Bhanu Pratap Singh. The Delhi Police argued that the custodial remand was essential to probe further into the incident and gather necessary evidence. Although his defence team contended that police custody was unwarranted due to existing awareness of the relevant facts, the court deemed the police’s request legitimate, highlighting the severity of the allegations.

As the investigation progresses, the police are prioritising the gather of critical documents and evidence linked to the operations of Flourish Stays Hotel. This includes reviewing electricity records, guest registers, and financial statements, which they believe are essential in piecing together the circumstances surrounding the incident.
