The Maharashtra Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has intensified its enforcement actions against food establishments across Mumbai and other districts, leading to the immediate suspension of three food licences. The inspections revealed severe violations related to food safety and hygiene practices.

In Malad West, the FDA suspended the food licence of Delhi Sweet & Bhelpuri House due to multiple breaches that posed significant health risks. Inspectors discovered that raw eggs were improperly stored alongside other food items in a freezer, and the overall hygiene of the premises was deemed inadequate. Furthermore, the establishment was cited for using contaminated water, insufficient packaging and labelling, and various employee hygiene issues.

Additional findings included deteriorating kitchen conditions, a lack of effective pest control measures, and food items found stored directly on the floor. Records showcasing mandatory health checks and training for staff were also conspicuously absent, prompting immediate action from the FDA.

Kurla Hotel Fails Hygiene Standards in Assessment

The FDA further suspended the food registration certificate of Gulzar Mohammedi Hotel located in Kurla West on August 31. This decision followed an inspection conducted on August 27, during which the establishment received a concerning score of only 24 out of a possible 100 points, equating to just 28 per cent.

Upon evaluation, inspectors noted the kitchen was in a deplorable state, characterised by dirt, grease accumulation on surfaces, and peeling plaster. Additionally, the storage of both raw and cooked food was deemed inappropriate, highlighting critical lapses in maintaining hygiene standards.

Other infractions included filthy drainage systems, untimely garbage disposal, and food being stored in open, unsanitary areas. Employees were found neglecting personal protective equipment, such as gloves and headgear, while essential records related to purchases and sales were not presented during the inquiry.

Blinkit Faces Action in Akola Over Non-compliance

In Akola, the FDA has also acted against Blink Commerce Pvt Ltd, known as Blinkit, suspending the food licence after the establishment failed to address identified deficiencies despite receiving an improvement notice. A preliminary inspection on August 12 had highlighted several issues requiring immediate rectification.

However, a follow-up inspection revealed that conditions had not improved. Inspectors found damaged plastic curtains at the entrances of cold storage units and improper arrangements for food and non-food items. Moreover, food packets were improperly placed on the floor, and an accumulation of dust and refuse created a hazardous environment.

During the inspection, employees were observed without appropriate protective gear, and necessary documentation, including records of purchases and sales, was not provided. Following a hearing regarding the failures to comply with the improvement notice, the FDA proceeded to suspend the licence on August 31.

Milk Seizure and Destruction in Sangli

In a related enforcement action, FDA officials conducted a raid at the Mayakka Milk Collection Centre in Sangli’s Miraj taluka on August 31. The inspection uncovered serious inadequacies in the handling and storage of milk products.

During the operation, officials took nine samples of raw cow’s milk and one sample of raw buffalo milk for testing. Approximately 120 litres of raw cow’s milk and 43 litres of raw buffalo milk, totalling 165 litres, were seized and subsequently destroyed due to safety concerns.

The FDA discovered that the milk had been stored at room temperature for over four hours, raising significant safety and traceability issues. Furthermore, it was alleged that a government seal on a cream separator—a vital piece of equipment—had been broken; this seal had been affixed by the FDA administration on August 11, 2026.
