Delhi Food Safety Department Seizes Over 322 Kg Ghee Amid Festive-Season Inspections

The CSR Journal Magazine

The Delhi government’s food safety department has seized more than 322 kg of ghee due to concerns regarding its quality and pricing during recent inspections. These inspections focused on shops that were advertising significant discounts on social media in the lead-up to the festive season. Officials reported that they aimed to ensure compliance with food safety standards and to prevent the sale of adulterated or substandard products.

Stores promoting offers such as ‘Buy One, Get One Free’ and discounts of up to 60 per cent were specifically targeted. The inspections were part of a broader initiative to safeguard public health and ensure that consumers receive safe food products. The government’s proactive approach aims to address potential risks associated with food adulteration.

Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta emphasised the government’s zero-tolerance policy towards food adulteration. In a statement released on Friday, she encouraged consumers to be vigilant about the quality and packaging of food items, advising them to check manufacturing and expiry dates before making purchases.

Details of the Seizures

During the inspections conducted at Maxcart Store and Aggarwal Store in Vikaspuri, officials collected five enforcement samples of ghee from various brands, alongside five samples of other food products. The total quantity of ghee seized during these inspections exceeded 75.50 litres. At Aggarwal Store in Hastal village, officials gathered three enforcement samples of ghee from the Shri Shan, Vrinda Farms, and Avtar brands, resulting in the seizure of 246 kg of ghee.

The food safety department stated that the collected samples would undergo laboratory testing to assess their quality. The results of these tests will determine the next steps in the enforcement process. The department has reiterated its commitment to ensuring that food products available in the market meet safety standards.

In addition to ghee, separate inspections led to the collection of two samples of sugar-boiled confectionery from Sahib Sons in Azad Market, which operates under the trade name Vicon International. These samples were taken due to suspected labelling irregularities. Furthermore, samples of makhana and turmeric powder were collected from Jain Store in Lajpat Nagar, and officials also gathered samples of two varieties of biscuits, soft candy, and sugar-based candy from Yug Basket Private Limited in Rithala.

Compliance Issues Identified

The food safety department reported that several establishments inspected during this operation exhibited shortcomings in compliance with food safety standards. These findings will be addressed through appropriate measures to ensure adherence to regulations. The department is committed to taking necessary actions against any violations discovered during the inspections.

Officials have stressed the importance of maintaining high standards in food safety, particularly during festive seasons when consumer demand often surges. The department’s ongoing efforts aim to protect public health by ensuring that all food products sold in the market are safe for consumption.

The inspections and subsequent seizures serve as a reminder to both consumers and retailers about the importance of food safety. The Delhi government continues to prioritise the health and wellbeing of its citizens by enforcing stringent food safety regulations and conducting regular inspections in the marketplace.
