Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman unveiled a ₹250 commemorative coin on 3 November 2026 to celebrate the 250th birth anniversary of Muthuswami Dikshitar, a prominent figure in Carnatic music. The event took place at Banaras Hindu University (BHU) in Varanasi, organised by the Centre of Excellence for Indian Knowledge Systems at IIT-BHU. According to a statement from the institute, the coin has been issued by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI).

The coin is available for purchase at ₹6,985, with 238 pieces listed for sale as of Tuesday evening. These commemorative coins are typically minted in limited quantities using precious metals and are primarily intended for collectors rather than for everyday transactions.

Significance of Muthuswami Dikshitar’s Contributions

During the event, Sitharaman acknowledged Muthuswami Dikshitar’s profound impact on Indian classical music and his role in enriching the nation’s cultural heritage. She engaged with students from IIT-BHU, elaborating on the nuances of Indian classical music and the unique characteristics of various musical instruments. Prior to the main event, she paid homage to the statue of Pandit Madan Mohan Malaviya, the founder of BHU.

Sitharaman also interacted with schoolchildren, introducing them to the traditions of Carnatic music and discussing Dikshitar’s notable contributions. She highlighted the significance of his association with Kashi and his time spent in the city, emphasising the need to instil an appreciation of cultural heritage in younger generations.

She remarked on the importance of familiarising children with India’s rich cultural traditions from an early age, stating that this fosters a deeper understanding of their cultural identity. Sitharaman noted the increasing use of digital devices among children and suggested that while technology has its merits, participation in cultural programmes offers unique experiences that enhance understanding of various art forms.

Support from the Bombay Stock Exchange

The initiative to release the commemorative coin received backing from the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) as part of its corporate social responsibility (CSR) programme. BSE Managing Director Sundararaman Ramamurthy made a notable contribution towards this initiative. During the event, Banaras Hindu University Vice-Chancellor Prof Ajit Kumar Chaturvedi shared insights on the significance of the occasion, while IIT-BHU Director Prof Amit Patra discussed Muthuswami Dikshitar’s esteemed position in Indian classical music.

The ceremony featured performances of Carnatic music, including a tribute by renowned vocalist Dr Sumitra Vasudev from Karnataka. Her performance was followed by a veena recital by Ramana Balachandhran, with accompaniment from Ganapatiraman on the mridangam and L Ramakrishnan on the violin. These performances showcased the rich heritage of Carnatic music, further enhancing the cultural significance of the event.

Muthuswami Dikshitar’s Legacy

Muthuswami Dikshitar is celebrated as one of the Trinity of Carnatic music, alongside Tyagaraja and Syama Sastri. His compositions, primarily in Sanskrit, are known for their integration of devotion, Indian philosophy, and classical music traditions. It is estimated that he composed around 450 to 500 works, many of which remain popular in contemporary classical music concerts.

Dikshitar spent a significant amount of time in Varanasi, where he composed numerous pieces dedicated to temples and Hindu deities. His deep connection with the city was a focal point during Sitharaman’s address, underscoring the maestro’s enduring influence on the cultural landscape of India.
