PM Modi Celebrates India’s Record Medal Haul at Asian Para Games

The CSR Journal Magazine

Prime Minister Narendra Modi met with India’s medal winners from the recent Asian Para Games held in Japan, congratulating them on their unprecedented success. India secured a total of 114 medals, comprising 30 gold, 35 silver, and 49 bronze, marking the nation’s best performance in the history of the event. A contingent of 168 athletes represented India, with 97 para-athletes contributing to this record-breaking tally.

The meeting, attended by Sports Minister Mansukh Mandaviya and Minister of State for Sports Raksha Khadse, included notable athletes such as double gold-medallist Sheetal Devi and visually impaired sprinter Simran. Modi emphasised the remarkable journey of Indian para-sports, recalling that the country had previously won only 14 medals, including one gold, at the 2010 Asian Para Games.

“Who would have thought of this journey from 14 to 114?” Modi stated, attributing the success to the athletes’ dedication and the supportive ecosystem that has developed around para-sports in India.

Record-Breaking Performances

India’s latest medal tally surpassed the previous record of 108 medals achieved at the 2023 Asian Para Games in Hangzhou. Modi highlighted the five world records and nine Asian records set by Indian athletes during the competition. He also acknowledged the significant role of women in this achievement, noting that 34 of the 111 medal winners were female athletes.

The final day of the Games was particularly fruitful, with India winning nine gold medals, pushing the overall total beyond the previous record. Modi remarked on the athletes’ relentless pursuit of victory, stating, “It felt like you hadn’t just decided to win, but as long as the Games were ongoing, stopping the streak of winning medals was simply not an option!”

Para-athletics emerged as the leading contributor, accounting for 65 medals, including 22 gold. Noteworthy performances included Sumit Antil’s gold in the men’s javelin throw F42-44/61-64 combined event and Sandeep’s world record in the men’s 400m T64 final.

Transforming the Sporting Landscape

Modi attributed the success of Indian athletes to the advancements in the country’s sporting ecosystem, which has improved access to training and resources. He reflected on the state of sports before 2014, describing inadequate facilities and a lack of transparency. “We decided we wouldn’t let the dreams of our youth be crushed and resolved to change the entire system itself,” he asserted.

The Prime Minister pointed out the expansion of Khelo India centres and the various initiatives supporting para-athletes. Athletes linked to the Khelo India programme won 41 medals at the Asian Para Games, while 61 competitors made their debut, with 31 returning with medals.

Modi also discussed the economic opportunities arising from the sports sector, mentioning the government’s approval of a Khelo India manufacturing scheme worth over Rs 1,000 crore. He advocated for Indian-made sports gear, stating, “When an Indian or foreign player steps onto the field, their sports gear should also be ‘Made in India’!”

Inspiring Future Generations

In addition to celebrating the athletes’ achievements, Modi addressed initiatives aimed at enhancing opportunities for persons with disabilities. He encouraged medal winners to share their journeys and inspire young people during visits to educational institutions. He reminded them that their success at the Asian Para Games should not be seen as the culmination of their careers.

“This podium is not your final milestone in life. Please keep this in mind,” Modi urged, encouraging athletes to view their achievements as a springboard for greater ambitions. “The country stands with you. I am right here with you, waiting for your next victory,” he added, reinforcing his support for the athletes’ future endeavours.
