India Successfully Test-Fires Quasi-Ballistic Missile Pralay

The CSR Journal Magazine

India has successfully conducted a flight test of its indigenously developed quasi-ballistic missile, Pralay, off the coast of Odisha. This event took place on November 5, 2026, at approximately 11:10 am. The test was executed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) from Dr APJ Abdul Kalam Island as part of user evaluation trials aimed at assessing the missile’s capabilities.

According to the Defence Ministry, the test achieved all its objectives, with data collected from various range instruments confirming the missile’s performance. This successful trial is a significant step towards the missile’s induction into the Indian armed forces, with the ministry indicating that the system’s induction is now imminent.

The Pralay missile is designed as a short-range, surface-to-surface quasi-ballistic missile. It has a strike range of 150 to 500 kilometres and can carry a payload of 500 to 1,000 kg. The missile employs solid propellant technology and features advanced guidance and navigation systems, ensuring high precision in targeting.

Technical Specifications and Development

Pralay is capable of carrying various types of warheads, allowing it to engage a range of targets effectively. The missile has been developed by the Research Centre Imarat in Hyderabad, in collaboration with several other DRDO laboratories. Bharat Dynamics Limited (BDL), a key partner in the development and production process, has been responsible for manufacturing the system.

The flight test was attended by senior officials from the DRDO, representatives from the defence industry, and members of the Defence Forces. This gathering underscored the collaborative efforts involved in the development and testing of the missile.

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh extended his congratulations to the DRDO, the armed forces, and industry partners following the successful test. He noted that the missile, equipped with advanced technologies, would significantly enhance the military’s technological capabilities and operational readiness in response to emerging threats.

Implications for India’s Defence Capabilities

The successful test of the Pralay missile represents a crucial advancement in India’s indigenous defence capabilities. In a post on X, Defence Minister Singh described the trial as “another significant milestone” in strengthening the country’s defence systems. He confirmed that all stipulated objectives had been met, as validated by the data collected during the test.

Defence Secretary Rajesh Kumar Singh, who also serves as the Secretary of the Department of Defence Research and Development and DRDO Chairman, congratulated the teams involved in this successful flight test. The latest trial signifies an important move towards the operational deployment of the Pralay missile, highlighting India’s commitment to developing indigenous missile systems and reducing reliance on foreign technologies.

As user evaluation trials continue to progress successfully, the Pralay missile is expected to move closer to its induction into the armed forces. This development will further bolster India’s conventional strike capabilities, enhancing its overall military preparedness in the region.
