The CSR Journal Magazine

The Indian stock market experienced a significant increase on Thursday, with the BSE Sensex opening 1,400 points higher, reflecting a positive sentiment among investors. The index was trading at 78,651.14, up 1,349.74 points or 1.75%, by 9:24 am. The market opened at 78,910.94 and reached an early high of 78,922.44. Similarly, the NSE Nifty 50 was at 24,336.30, up 375.70 points or 1.57%, at 9:25 am, having opened at 24,378.05 and touched a high of 24,391.95.

This upward movement followed a positive trading session on Wednesday, where the Sensex closed at 77,301.40, gaining 383.55 points, while the Nifty settled at 23,960.60, up 149.75 points. The surge in the market is attributed to a notable decline in crude oil prices, renewed foreign investor interest, and an overall improvement in global market sentiment.

Broad-based buying was evident across various sectors, with major stocks contributing to the rally. IndiGo emerged as the top gainer among Sensex constituents, rising 5.07%, followed closely by Bajaj Finance, which increased by 4.63%. Other notable gainers included Asian Paints, Mahindra & Mahindra, and Maruti Suzuki, reflecting a robust market performance.

Sectoral Gains and Broader Market Participation

The Nifty Auto sector led the gains with a rise of 2.04%, while Nifty Realty and Nifty Financial Services also recorded significant increases of 1.94% and 2.41%, respectively. The Nifty Financial Services ex-Bank index rose by 2.72%, and both Nifty PSU Bank and Nifty Private Bank saw increases of 1.55% and 1.57%. Additionally, Nifty IT gained 1.60%, and Nifty Media and Nifty Metal advanced by 1.24% and 0.84%.

The broader market also joined the upward trend, with Nifty 100 gaining 1.47%, Nifty 200 rising 1.37%, and Nifty 500 advancing 1.32%. The Nifty Midcap 100 was up by 0.97%, while the Nifty Smallcap 100 saw a gain of 0.71%. This widespread participation indicates a strong bullish sentiment across various market segments.

The positive market dynamics have been further supported by the sharp decline in global crude oil prices. Brent crude was trading at $93.59 per barrel, down 1.09%, while US West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude fell 1.53% to $86.77. The decrease in oil prices is seen as beneficial for India, which relies heavily on imports to meet its oil needs.

Foreign Institutional Investors Return to the Market

Foreign institutional investors (FIIs) have reportedly resumed buying in Indian equities after a period of consistent selling. Dr V K Vijayakumar, Chief Investment Strategist at Geojit Investments Limited, noted that FIIs purchased equities worth Rs 20,834 crore in the cash market over the last four trading sessions. This shift in investor behaviour is attributed to declining crude prices and improving corporate earnings.

The outcome of the recent US midterm elections has also contributed to a more optimistic global outlook, potentially reducing trade uncertainties. Changes in congressional control could limit aggressive trade policies, which may positively influence emerging markets like India. Dr Ravi Singh, Chief Research Officer at Master Capital Services Ltd, indicated that this could lead to increased foreign institutional inflows into Indian equities.

While the market shows signs of bullish momentum, experts caution against potential profit booking at higher levels. Domestic institutional investors have displayed tendencies to sell during rallies, which could impact the sustainability of the current market trend. The overall sentiment remains cautiously optimistic as geopolitical developments and crude prices continue to evolve.
