Amul Announces Price Increases for Ghee and Butter Ahead of Diwali

The CSR Journal Magazine

Consumers will face higher costs for Amul ghee and butter as the dairy company has announced a price increase. The adjustments coincide with the festive season, which may add to household expenditures. According to the updated maximum retail prices (MRP), a 1-kilogram carton of Amul ghee is now priced at Rs 680, a rise from the previous Rs 640. Additionally, the 500-gram pouch of pure ghee has seen an increase from Rs 325 to Rs 345.

Amul cow ghee has also experienced a similar price hike. The cost of the 500-millilitre pouch has escalated from Rs 350 to Rs 370, while the 1-litre pouch is now available for Rs 735, up from Rs 695. These adjustments reflect a broader trend in dairy product pricing, which is likely to impact consumers during this festive period.

Butter prices have similarly risen. The 100-gram pack, which was previously sold for Rs 63, is now priced at Rs 66. Furthermore, the 500-gram pack has increased from Rs 310 to Rs 325. These changes in pricing may prompt consumers to reconsider their purchasing habits as they navigate the increased costs associated with these essential dairy products.

Reasons Behind the Price Increase

Amul has stated that the revised prices for Amul Table Butter, Amul Ghee, and Amul Cow Ghee will take effect from October 2, 2026. The company has indicated that the primary reason for this price adjustment is the rising costs associated with milk production. As input costs increase, dairy cooperatives like Amul find it necessary to adjust their retail prices accordingly to maintain operational viability.

Amul is a cooperative organisation that is owned by approximately 36 lakh farmers. This ownership structure highlights the importance of ensuring fair compensation for farmers while also managing the costs of production. The cooperative model aims to benefit both producers and consumers, but fluctuations in production costs can lead to inevitable price adjustments.

Stocks reflecting the new prices are expected to be available in markets across the country shortly. This rollout will allow consumers to see the updated pricing in retail outlets. As the festive season approaches, it remains to be seen how these price changes will influence consumer behaviour and spending patterns.

Impact on Consumers and Market Trends

The increase in prices for ghee and butter may have a significant impact on consumer budgets, particularly during the festive season when demand for dairy products typically rises. Households may need to adjust their spending to accommodate these new prices, which could lead to changes in purchasing decisions. Consumers may opt for smaller quantities or seek alternatives if the price increases strain their budgets.

Market analysts will likely monitor the situation closely to assess how these price changes affect overall dairy consumption. The adjustments may also prompt discussions about the sustainability of dairy prices in the long term, especially in light of fluctuating production costs. The cooperative model employed by Amul is designed to support farmers, but it also faces challenges in balancing consumer affordability.

As the festive season unfolds, the dairy market will be closely observed for further developments. The price increases by Amul may set a precedent for other dairy producers, potentially leading to a broader trend in price adjustments across the sector. Consumers and industry stakeholders alike will be keen to see how these changes play out in the coming weeks and months.
