Alligator Enters Bagel Shop in North Carolina, Customer Prepares to Defend Himself

The CSR Journal Magazine

An unusual incident occurred at a bagel shop in North Carolina when a small alligator made its way inside. The reptile was spotted at Bagel Dock Express in Southport on Thursday, reportedly entering through the back entrance and strolling through the stockroom before reaching the front counter. Employees and customers were taken aback by the unexpected appearance of the approximately three-foot-long creature.

Surveillance footage from the establishment showed the alligator moving about the shop, while one customer appeared to ready himself with a chair in an attempt to defend against the intruder. The incident was shared widely, with social media users commenting on the peculiar nature of the event.

Local resident Lorrie Ann highlighted the increasing presence of alligators in the area, mentioning previous sightings in various locations, including a Walmart parking lot and a golf course. Her comments reflect a growing awareness of the wildlife in coastal North Carolina.

Shop Owner’s Reaction to the Incident

Jesse Driscoll, the owner of Bagel Dock Express, recounted the moment the alligator entered while he was in the process of installing a new oven. He expressed surprise at the encounter, stating that he never anticipated seeing an alligator inside a bagel shop. Driscoll’s reaction underscores the unexpected nature of wildlife interactions in urban settings.

The shop’s humorous response to the incident included a light-hearted comment on social media, suggesting that the alligator had come for the fresh bagels. This playful remark helped to ease the tension surrounding the unusual situation.

Following the incident, Southport police officers, along with an animal protective services officer, safely removed the alligator from the premises. The police department later confirmed the successful capture and relocation of the animal through a social media post, ensuring the public that the situation was handled appropriately.

Increasing Alligator Encounters in North Carolina

The incident at Bagel Dock Express is part of a broader trend of increasing encounters between humans and alligators in coastal regions of North Carolina. The state’s Wildlife Resources Commission has issued warnings regarding the growing frequency of such interactions, particularly during the alligator mating season.

Earlier this year, the commission advised residents and visitors against feeding or interacting with alligators, as this could lead to dangerous situations. The agency reported receiving numerous calls daily about public encounters with the reptiles, highlighting the need for awareness and caution.

John Henry Harrelson, a wildlife management district biologist, cautioned that feeding alligators could alter their behaviour, causing them to associate humans with food. He noted that while alligators are generally shy, repeated feeding could diminish their natural fear of people, increasing the likelihood of dangerous encounters.

In response to the rising number of alligator sightings, the Wildlife Resources Commission has developed GatorWise, a set of guidelines aimed at educating the public. These guidelines advise individuals to remain vigilant and to take precautions when in areas where alligators might be present, including keeping children and pets safe and avoiding any attempts to approach or feed the animals.
