BMW Report: Mini Cooper Was Speeding at 162 Kmph Before Kochi Crash

The CSR Journal Magazine

BMW’s recent inspection of a Mini Cooper involved in a fatal incident near Kochi last month revealed that the vehicle was travelling at a speed of 162 kmph five seconds prior to the collision. This information was disclosed by police on Thursday, highlighting the significance of the findings in the ongoing investigation.

The crash data indicated that the driver, identified as Suhail, engaged the brakes approximately one second before impact, at which point the car had slowed to a speed of 144 kmph. This critical data was obtained from the Advanced Crash Safety Module of the vehicle, which records essential information during a collision.

Police officials stated that the insights provided by BMW’s technical report corroborated their earlier conclusions drawn from CCTV footage, which showed the car covering a distance of 500 metres in just 11 seconds. This evidence is considered vital for establishing the circumstances surrounding the crash.

Details of the Fatal Incident

The tragic incident occurred in the early hours of October 11, when the Mini Cooper collided with a scooter, resulting in the deaths of two women and a man, all approximately 21 years old. The crash took place in Nedumbassery, near Kochi, prompting an immediate investigation by local authorities.

According to police reports, Suhail was driving the Mini Cooper while allegedly under the influence of alcohol. He has been named as the primary accused in the case. Additionally, three of his friends—Ninav, Ameer, and Joel—have also been implicated for allegedly aiding and abetting the offence. All four individuals are currently in judicial custody as the investigation progresses.

Aluva Deputy Superintendent of Police Baiju Paulose is overseeing the investigation, which is being conducted under the supervision of District Police Chief KS Sudarshan. The authorities are meticulously examining various aspects of the crash, including the speed of the vehicle, the actions of the driver immediately before the collision, and the involvement of the other accused.

Significance of the BMW Report

The report submitted by BMW India is regarded as a crucial piece of evidence in the ongoing investigation. It provides a scientific basis that supports the conclusions drawn by the investigation team regarding the car’s speed at the time of the crash. This data is expected to play an important role in the legal proceedings that follow.

Investigators are continuing to gather evidence and interview witnesses to build a comprehensive understanding of the events leading up to the collision. The police are committed to ensuring that all aspects of the case are thoroughly examined, with the aim of delivering justice for the victims and their families.

As the investigation unfolds, the focus remains on establishing the full circumstances surrounding the crash, including the potential impact of alcohol consumption on the driver’s actions. The community is awaiting further developments in this tragic case, which has raised significant concerns regarding road safety and responsible driving behaviour.
