Delhi Government Destroys 6,700 Kg of Unsafe Khoya in Food Safety Crackdown

The CSR Journal Magazine

The Delhi government has taken decisive action by destroying 6,700 kg of unsafe khoya, which was seized from a wholesale market in the capital. This operation is part of a broader initiative to ensure food safety during the festive season. Chief Minister Rekha Gupta inspected the khoya market at Mori Gate on Tuesday, November 3, and expressed her commitment to maintaining public health standards. She emphasised that the government would not tolerate any compromises regarding food safety and that strict legal measures would be enforced against individuals involved in food adulteration.

This operation is the latest in a series of intensified crackdowns aimed at preventing unsafe food products from reaching consumers, particularly during Diwali and other upcoming festivals. The government has increased inspections to ensure that large quantities of khoya, commonly used in sweets and festive dishes, are safe for public consumption. Gupta directed officials to monitor the market closely to prevent any suspicious food items from being sold.

During her visit, Gupta reiterated the government’s responsibility to provide safe and high-quality food during festivals. She warned that even those in influential positions would not be exempt from legal action if found guilty of adulteration. “Those who poison the happiness of festivals will not be spared under any circumstances,” she stated.

Results of Preliminary Testing

The Food Safety Department conducted a thorough examination of 44 khoya samples collected during the operation at Mori Gate. The preliminary tests revealed that 35 of these samples failed to meet safety standards. The department employed its mobile testing facility, ‘Food Safety on Wheels’, to conduct on-site analyses. Two additional samples were sent to a laboratory for further examination to determine their actual composition and quality.

The initial findings suggested the presence of potentially harmful substances, including milk powder, vegetable fat, and binding agents in the khoya. This operation marks the fourth significant crackdown on adulterated khoya at the Mori Gate market, where officials seized and destroyed the suspicious stock immediately to prevent its use in food products.

Health Minister Dr Pankaj Singh highlighted that the government had received intelligence regarding the influx of fake mawa into Delhi through Mori Gate. Following a planning meeting with Food Safety Department officials, Singh stated that the government is committed to ensuring that counterfeit mawa does not enter the market. “As long as I am the Health Minister of Delhi, we will not allow fake mawa to be sold in the city,” he asserted.

Continuous Vigilance and Future Inspections

With the latest operation, the total amount of unsafe khoya destroyed by the Delhi government has now reached 10,660 kg. Previous operations included the destruction of 2,830 kg on September 4, followed by 610 kg on September 8, and 520 kg on October 23. The government has made it clear that inspections and enforcement actions will continue as part of its efforts to safeguard public health during the festive season.
