Lucknow Fire: PM Modi Announces Financial Aid, CM Yogi Cuts Short Aligarh Visit

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has expressed profound sorrow over the tragic loss of lives in the recent fire at a coaching institute in Lucknow’s Aliganj area. In a statement released on X, the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) confirmed that financial assistance will be provided through the Prime Minister’s National Relief Fund (PMNRF). The announcement included an ex-gratia payment of Rs 2 lakh for the families of each individual who lost their life, along with Rs 50,000 for those injured.

In addressing the grief caused by this incident, the PMO included Modi’s condolences to the families affected. The Prime Minister remarked on the ongoing rescue operations and assured that authorities are extending all necessary support to those impacted. His affirmations came alongside his expression of hope for the swift recovery of the injured.

Chief Minister Cuts Visit Short to Address Disaster

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath responded quickly to the disaster, announcing that he would curtail his visit to Aligarh after learning about the fire. During an address to the public in Aligarh, he conveyed the urgency of returning to Lucknow to oversee the situation, expressing his deep sorrow over the loss of young lives due to the fire.

Adityanath extended heartfelt condolences to the families who have suffered significant loss. He added that he has directed the Uttar Pradesh Director General of Police and the Additional Chief Secretary (Home) to conduct a thorough investigation and provide a report on the circumstances surrounding the incident. The Chief Minister affirmed that justice would be pursued for those responsible.

The Chief Minister also indicated he would reschedule his visit to Aligarh, emphasising the need to fully address the incident in Lucknow. He acknowledged the role of the administration in ongoing relief efforts.

Reactions from Other State Leaders

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh joined others in expressing condolences regarding the Lucknow fire. He described the incident as heart-wrenching and sent thoughts and prayers to the families grieving their losses, while also calling for a rapid recovery for those injured in the event.

Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami characterised the incident as extremely tragic. He conveyed his prayers for the souls lost in the fire and expressed wishes for the families to find strength in their sorrow. His remarks echoed a widespread sentiment of grief felt across the region, as leaders from different political backgrounds united in their condolences.

Earlier reports from Uttar Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister Brajesh Pathak confirmed the loss of 15, while four others sustained serious injuries.

Investigation and Rescue Operations Ongoing

As rescue operations continue at the site of the fire, efforts have been made to recover not only people but animals as well. Reports mention that cats from a pet shop within the same building were rescued. The fire reportedly affected a structure containing both a library and a computer training institute, which contributed to the chaos of the incident.

An eyewitness described the scene as one of severe panic, with initial responders encountering significant challenges. The cause of the fire is still under investigation, and further details are anticipated as authorities continue their work.
