The Delhi Chief Minister, Rekha Gupta, recently announced the distribution of more than 3,000 bicycles to Class 9 girl students as part of the ‘Vidya Vahini Yojana.’ This event took place on July 31 at the East Vinod Nagar Sports Complex. The programme seeks to improve access to education and encourage attendance among girl students while also promoting empowerment across gender lines. The initiative is regarded as the first phase of a broader scheme targeting a total of 1.40 lakh girl students enrolled in government schools.

During the occasion, Gupta expressed her enthusiasm about the initiative, stating, “It is a joyous occasion as we celebrate the government’s effort to facilitate better school access for girls, particularly those advancing into Class 9.” She noted that by providing bicycles, the scheme supports both education and safety, thereby easing the commutes of these young learners. Furthermore, she congratulated the students and encouraged them to pursue their dreams, thereby contributing positively to society.

The Chief Minister emphasised the importance of removing educational barriers and bolstering the confidence of young girls. She stated, “Our resolve is that this scheme reaches more than 1.40 lakh daughters studying in Class 9 in government schools.” Gupta explained that the availability of bicycles would enhance school attendance and provide more opportunities for both academics and sports. Additionally, she acknowledged the potential financial benefits for families, as bicycles can reduce commuting costs.

Event Attended by Dignitaries and Key Officials

The bicycle distribution event was attended by notable figures, including Harsh Malhotra, the Delhi BJP State President and Union Minister of State, along with Cabinet Minister Ashish Sood and MLA Ravindra Negi. Their presence underscored the importance of the initiative in promoting girls’ education and empowerment. Gupta’s commitments during the event reflect a broader focus on supporting educational access while fostering gender equality in Delhi.

In conjunction with this initiative, Gupta had earlier addressed the establishment of the Delhi Commission for Women (DCW) and the Delhi Minorities Commission (DMC) on July 26. This initiative aimed to reinforce the protection of women’s rights and ensure the welfare of minority communities in the region. The necessary orders appointing the chairpersons and members for both panels were issued under Gupta’s direction, signifying a comprehensive approach to governance.

Lata Gupta has been designated as the Chairperson of the DCW, while various members have been appointed to support this important commission. Similarly, Nirmal Jain has been appointed Chairperson of the DMC, which focuses on the needs and rights of minority communities. Gupta reiterated the government’s aims to empower women and ensure that constitutional rights are effectively protected.

Focus on Good Governance and Social Justice

Rekha Gupta highlighted the government’s commitment to good governance and social justice, mentioning the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi in shaping these objectives. She remarked that the Delhi government is following a similar vision by ensuring that women and minorities receive both effective protection of their rights and equitable opportunities for advancement.

The continued implementation of initiatives like ‘Vidya Vahini Yojana’ aligns with the government’s mission to foster inclusive development. Gupta’s statements reflect a promise to maintain focus on promising educational opportunities for girls, supporting their aspirations and well-being within the educational system.

Overall, the bicycle distribution programme marks a significant step in enhancing educational infrastructure for girls in Delhi and ensures that the government remains committed to supporting the rights and empowerment of women and minority communities across the region.
