Khan Sir’s Institutes Sealed in Prayagraj Following Lucknow Fire Incident

The CSR Journal Magazine

Authorities in Prayagraj have sealed Khan Global Classes, a coaching centre linked to educator Khan Sir, in response to a recent tragic fire incident at a coaching institute in Lucknow. This fire, which occurred in the Aliganj area, resulted in the loss of 15 lives and raised serious concerns about safety standards in educational institutions across Uttar Pradesh.

The action was initiated on the orders of Prayagraj Development Authority (PDA) vice-chairman Rishi Raj, who directed inspections to determine compliance with safety and building regulations among coaching institutes. An enforcement team from the PDA, led by zonal officer Gangesh Kumar Singh, executed the sealing operation at the Civil Lines centre on Tuesday.

During the operation, students were required to vacate the premises, and the office was shut prior to sealing the building. A notice was affixed outside, informing that any attempts to breach the seal or resume activities without proper permission could lead to legal action, including the registration of a First Information Report (FIR).

Community Facility Regulations Not Met

PDA officials revealed that the building housing Khan Global Classes had received approval for commercial use but lacked the necessary separate approval for functioning as a community facility, which coaching centres fall under. “Though the building is permitted for commercial use, it does not have the requisite approval for community facility land use,” stated an official from the PDA. Consequently, the sealing action was performed in accordance with regulatory requirements.

This incident follows the Lucknow fire, which has amplified scrutiny of safety standards and regulatory compliance in educational facilities throughout the state. Local authorities have initiated inspections of coaching centres and other institutions with high foot traffic in various cities, reflecting heightened concern for public safety.

Operators of coaching centres in the region have expressed unease regarding the potential impact of these inspections. Additional actions against other institutions found violating land-use regulations have been indicated by local authorities, which could lead to further closures.

Impact on Coaching Centre Operators

The sealing of Khan Global Classes has triggered apprehension among other coaching institutions in Prayagraj, with many operators now reassessing their compliance with local safety regulations. The actions taken by the PDA serve as a warning to all coaching centres about the importance of adhering to safety and building codes.

This episode highlights the necessity for educational institutions to ensure they meet all regulatory requirements, particularly in light of recent tragedies. The fire in Lucknow has prompted a broader dialogue about safety protocols and infrastructural integrity in coaching centres across the state.

As inspections continue, it remains to be seen whether more coaching institutes will face similar closures. The authorities are keen to enforce compliance and prevent any future incidents that could jeopardise student safety.
