The CSR Journal Magazine

The Kailash Mansarovar Yatra has officially commenced as the first group of pilgrims crossed into China through the Nathu La Pass on June 20, 2026. This event marks the start of their journey to the revered Kailash Mansarovar. The batch, consisting of 44 individuals, was flagged off by the Sikkim Governor, Om Prakash Mathur, alongside the state’s Tourism Minister Tshering Thendup Bhutia and officials from the Sikkim Tourism Development Corporation.

Diverse Representation Among Pilgrims

This initial group comprises 44 pilgrims, including four Liaison Officers and a Medical Officer. The participants include 32 men and 12 women, representing a variety of states such as Bihar, Haryana, Rajasthan, Maharashtra, Delhi, Punjab, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, and Odisha. All individuals have successfully passed the final medical examinations before embarking on this journey.

Sikkim Chief Secretary R Telang conducted a review of logistical arrangements prior to the Yatra. This included considerations of hospitality, medical services, power and water availability, road conditions, traffic management, network connectivity, customs procedures, and media coverage. Coordination involved senior officers from relevant departments to facilitate a seamless pilgrimage experience.

Telang noted that their responsibilities extend to ensuring security coverage, medical support, and assisting with border crossings for the group. The age of participants ranges from 30 to 70 years, highlighting a diverse demographic undertaking this spiritual pilgrimage.

Government Support and Pilgrim Sentiments

In a statement to the media, Governor Mathur expressed his hopes for the pilgrims to have a safe and enriching experience, indicating that they would return home with positive stories about the hospitality they encountered in Sikkim. The pilgrims themselves praised the comprehensive support provided by various governmental bodies, describing the preparations as commendable.

One pilgrim remarked on the smooth organisation of the journey, expressing eagerness to witness the darshan of Lord Shiva, a central aspect of this pilgrimage. The enthusiasm among the participants reflects their religious fervour as they embark on this significant journey.

Sikkim’s Tourism Minister highlighted the palpable energy and excitement among the group as they began their journey to Kailash Mansarovar. The Ministry of External Affairs organises the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra annually between June and August or September, utilising the routes of Lipulekh Pass in Uttarakhand and Nathu La Pass in Sikkim.

Significance of the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra

The Kailash Mansarovar Yatra is famed for its spiritual and cultural importance, attracting hundreds of pilgrims each year. For Hindus, this site is recognised as the abode of Lord Shiva, while also holding significance for followers of Jainism and Buddhism. The pilgrimage is open to eligible Indian citizens with valid passports wishing to visit Kailash Mansarovar for religious purposes.

As the Yatra progresses, the commitment of state and central government agencies remains evident in their efforts to ensure a smooth pilgrimage for all participating individuals. The organisational structure aims to address every aspect affecting the pilgrims’ experience, from travel safety to health care provisions.
